damn, seeing drake on this blog has made its credibility decrease.. I just don’t see the appeal. Same league as Lil wayne, all the other lil’ somethings and young somethings. kinda sad now.

Well, I’m afraid you must be new on this site and probably haven’t checked out my radio show too often. I’m a big Drake fan and yes, my Jansport still fits. I don’t think it’s fair to say that he’s the same as Wayne or any other random wack rappers…Drake has a lot of talent, both in the rhymes and with melodies/song structure. Are you telling me that you don’t like his tracks with Elzhi, Phonte, Tanya Morgan, etc.? Just cause he’s popular, doesn’t mean he’s wack. In fact, to compare him bar for bar with Wayne is ludicrous, imo.

I’d encourage you to give him more listens without thinking about the, admittedly horrible, Young Money affiliation. But as Com said, if you don’t like, you don’t like it. I’m a fan though. Shrug.

I’ve never really been a fan of Drake and I’m not sure why you keep giving him spins on SNSS when he’s already in regular rotation on KUBE. I’m a bit puzzled by your interest in him but I can respect it, I just think it kind of defeats the purpose of the show to keep playing his songs after hes already “blown up”. Like you said being popular doesn’t make you wack, but it does kind of take away some of the appeal when everybody else is listening to his songs.

That’s the reason I have continued to visit this site so I can “be up on” new artist before the rest of the world finds out about them. You have done a great job running the blog, and I can put up with a couple of Drake post’s as long as I continue to get my “underground” fix. One last thing I will say about Drake is he has some good music taste if he is currently on tour with K-Os.

  3. Rhee says:

drake’s great, but not this song. too whiny, too nasaly

  4. Hyphen says:

@Marcus – Well, the point of Sound Session and The Audacity of Dope is to support ish that I think is dope. Kanye’s my favorite artist…does he need any additional help on the air or on the web? No, and yes, neither does Drake. That won’t stop me from playing music I think is great on the radio and posting stuff I like on the blog. The one caveat to that is that I do try to avoid playing the same records that everyone’s heard on our show, so once a record like “Over” or B.o.B’s “Nothing On You” was added to KUBE rotation, you haven’t heard them on our show. We play the stuff when it’s brand new and then move on, just like all our selections.

So, in no way does playing Drake defeat the purpose of the show…since we define the purpose and it’s to play music we like, with hopes that much of it is something that the average person hasn’t heard. That’s not a requirement though. We play Kanye, Jay, Nas, Outkast, Wu, Roots, Common, Drake, Lupe, etc.. Plenty of established artists.

I will always support “the underground,” just because it’s the music I’m more inclined to. I don’t subscribe to the idea that “it does kind of take away some of the appeal when everybody else is listening to his songs” at ALL though.

That’s kind of silly to me. If I like a song, I want everyone to hear it. I can’t keep an artist all to myself, nor would I want to. I wanted Kanye to blow the hell up in 2002 and I wanted Drake to blow up in 2008 when I first started peeping his stuff. Same thing really. Support what you like and root for those people to be successful so they can continue to make the music they want to make.

Drake definitely has good taste too…his favorite MC’s are Andre3000, Phonte, and Elzhi. Doesn’t really get much better, imo.

all I’m saying is I’m confused on why hes mentioned in the same breath as Elzhi. Honestly to me the dude is mad corny and I know being popular doesn’t make you wack, just look at mos def and talib. Being wack makes you wack. But for me, I’m a lyrics hound and drake doesn’t cut it for me. To say that he’s not like wayne and others is odd to me cuz thats exactly who is audience is. People that want catchy choruses and elementary, corny lyrics. I give everybody a chance though I feel, but I like what I like I guess.

  6. wax says:

and even in the list of artists you just said (Kanye, Jay, Nas, Outkast, Wu, Roots, Common, Drake, Lupe, etc..), drake seems out of place. Except for maybe kanye, the rest of them are some of the most lyrically talented artists to do it.

  7. Hyphen says:

Let me preface this by saying a) I’m glad you enjoy the blog/show despite our Drake differences and b) the beauty of art is that it is by nature, completely subjective. There’s no right answer. That said, lemme get on my Drake fan boy status and revert back to my messageboard posting days. I’ll respond kinda thought by thought in response:

Is Elzhi a better rapper than Drake? Yep, absolutely. Drake would agree. Does Drake make better records? Yep, I think most people would say he does. Even hip-hop heads.

Drake is definitely a little corny, but I’ve met a ton of artists and that’s actually a common trait. Even the guys who project the toughest hood image are maaaad corny to me a lot.

Even fans of lyrics should be able to see that Drake has talent. No, he’s not touching the elite MC’s bar for bar, but he can definitely rhyme. You can’t really listen to the “Say What’s Real” joint off So Far Gone and say he’s not spittin all over that.

Your audience does not define who you are. The fact that he shares an audience with Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Soulja Boy, etc. doesn’t mean his music is the same.

Certain Drake songs certainly have elementary lyrics, but many don’t. Especially the stuff off Room For Improvement and Comeback Season. Those are straight underground mixtapes. That said, lyrics aren’t everything and I value being able to make a dope song more than spitting a dope verse these days. Well, perhaps value isn’t the right word…but I ENJOY listening to good music over listening to 100 bars of fury. I don’t know how old you are, but I think that as I got older, I started consuming music more on feel than on technical breakdowns. Now my main concern is if the music moves me. Not if someone used multi syllable rhymes and double entendres…which Drake actually does quite often btw.

Kanye is lyrically talented too, though not on the level of the rest of those MC’s. But guess what, he makes better music than all of them with the possible exception of Outkast to me. I’d take “College Dropout,” “Late Registration,” and “Graduation” over any 3 albums from those artists’ respective catalogs…except for perhaps “Southernplayalistic,” “ATLiens,” and “Aquemini” of course. I’m a big Kanye fan and Drake shares a lot of Ye’s attributes.

I guess what this all boils down to is that Drake has the talent to make great records (could a crazy dope MC like Royce have written and arranged Alicia Keys’ “Unthinkable”?), despite not being an incredible MC. He’s a good MC, and FAR from “wack” (Gucci is wack. Soulja Boy is wack. Etc.). He’s a better MC than plenty of well respected underground rappers who “keep it real” for decades, that’s for sure. And yeah, I’d rather listen to “HoustAtlantaVegas” than Aesop Rock. All day, every day.

But that’s just me. And everyone can peep what they want to peep and make their musical taste decisions how they see fit.

I think we’re gunna have to agree to disagree. I really do like the blog though! But to be honest, and this is probably going to show my bias, I can’t even listen to a song or take it seriously if it has auto-tune on it. Its the very definition of lazy, mass appeal music. The only thing I have to disagree with on your last post is the fact that drake makes better records than Elzhi. I can see that you appreciate catchy hooks but to me thats not making better records, thats reaching out to the people who don’t care about what you’re saying as much as if they can dance to it. I think I just got a little salty when I saw drake being listed among some of my favorite MC’s. I like to keep my pop music verrry far from my hip hop and to me drake is hip pop.

      • Hyphen says:

It’s all good man, I appreciate the convo. One point though, I didn’t say it was a ‘fact’ that Drake makes better records than Elzhi. Again, music is subjective…it’s an opinion.

Making a good record is not solely about having a catchy hook too. There’s more involving the lyrics, the topics, the song structure, the melody, beat selection, etc.. Elzhi is one of my top 3 or 4 MC’s, easily, and I do enjoy his records. I personally enjoy Drake’s “So Far Gone” more than any Elzhi project (though Slum Village’s self titled album from 05 or 06 might give it a run for it’s money), but there’s no reason I can’t enjoy both.

I used to HATE music that wasn’t straight, raw boom-bap. Now I prefer listening to new Passion Pit than new Mobb Deep. “Seasons change, mad things rearrange”

  8. […] my man who doesn’t like when I post Drake stuff on the site is gonna want to skip over this one too hahah.  Not to compare the two unfairly, but […]

I don’t like all Drake songs, they just don’t appeal to me, however I can’t write him off based on a few unappealing songs. Anyway, please tell me you heard that “Fall For Your Type” joint…its a short little ditty bop, but I’m feeeeeelin’ it. haha.

    • Hyphen says:

hell yeah, this is a dope little record. Drake has a lot of these quick R&B demo joints that I don’t think he’s ever really finished before they leak. They show his ability to come up with these melodies. I like this one.

  10. […] What in the Hell? So once again it seems I’m getting into arguments about hip hop with people on forums or in this case another blog. At first I was hesitant to make this post because I didn’t want to start posting other people’s blogs without their permission so this might be a one time thing. Also, I couldn’t come up with a catchy name for the series so if you could give suggestions in the comments that might sway me. Anyway, one blog that I’ve been reading pretty consistently for a little while posted a drake video recently and of course without watching the video I immediately wrote a comment to cite the decrease in quality music. It became a very long discussion about drake and one point he said drake makes better records than Elzhi. Well, I may have been more harsh but that was the idea and it struck a nerve with the blogger which sucks because I actually like the blog. Here’s the link to the conversation.. AoD […]
