Sound Session #562 (7/31/16)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on August 1st, 2016 by Hyphen

Back to back SNSS updates for y’all, but sadly, this one is a bit lackluster.  Due to technical difficulties in the studio, we weren’t able to record the show so we’re just posting up the playlist for this week.  I don’t know how, but I’m 100% positive this is Trump’s fault.

Shame, as we played some really dope records from folks Chance, Rexx Life Raj, Ivan Ave, Shad, J. Cole, Mac Miller, Noname, Sinead Harnett, Mogul, Set Mo, ZHU, Louis Mattrs, NAO, and more.  You absolutely have to peep that NAO album if you haven’t already.  Nothing will sound better in the sunshine this summer.  Shout to Beats, Rhymes and Life for celebrating its 20th anniversary on our throwback too.  Named my college radio show and old mixtape series after that album, even though you Tribe purists still hate it…

This is crazy!

Posted in Live Performances, Videos on January 29th, 2011 by Hyphen

I’ve heard a few of them done better, but overall, this beatbox performance from France’s EKLIPS is bananas.  Oui, c’est bon.

Kuddie Fresh – Music N Flight (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on April 20th, 2009 by Hyphen

The homey Kuddie Fresh stopped by Sound Session last night and it happened to be great timing because he just dropped a real dope instrumental project called Music N Flight.  If you aren’t up on the slaps from the first ever Red Bull Big Tune Champion, stop sleeping.  After getting the official stamp of approval from Henny and Dow by signing on with Tha Bizness, it’s only a matter of time before Kuddie gets the nationwide exposure he’s due.

Download here (or here), and be sure to peep Kuddie’s blog too.

Focus on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on April 15th, 2009 by Hyphen

Hands down, my favorite part of hosting a radio show for the last decade (wow…i’m old) is helping shine light on folks who aren’t getting the respect they deserve.  Now, those within the industry obviously know how talented Focus is, but the general public is still a bit behind.  Recently, they’ve started to learn as he’s unleashed his “homage” series of songs dedicated towards some of his biggest inspirations (DJ Premier, J Dilla, and Pete Rock so far).

We had the chance to catch up with Focus on Sound Session and talk all about how that series came together and who will be next up to receive a homage production.  We also talked about his background (his dad was the bass player in Chic…what!?!), what it’s like working with Dre on Detox, his creative process, the development of his artist, Kida, why there are more good beats than good rappers, and much more.  You can even hear Kida’s new track with Focus, “Must Be Nice,” included in the interview.  Peep it:

Be on the lookout for the next homage to drop real soon and please stop sleeping on this dude.  He flips every style better than most producers flip their specialties and he’s also taking music in his own direction at the same time.  Get familiar now or play catch up later.

Chyea, go ‘head Cook.  If you aren’t familiar with the homey Will, you need to get familiar.  He’s insanely talented and as he mentioned, he’s producing full ideas and making soundscapes that go above and beyond merely “making beats.”  [Mos] Get his rookie card now, while the price is cheap [/Def].

Shout to Greg, Tunj, and the whole 5-C’s.

S1 preps a beat for 50 Cent

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on July 25th, 2008 by Hyphen

The criminally underrated Symbolic One (of the Strange Fruit Project) brings y’all inside his studio as he works on a beat that’ll hopefully end up on 50’s next project, Before I Self Destruct.  It’s a nice quick look at the creative process of one of the best producers out there, plus beat they’re working on sounds like a banger.  Shout to his dude Caleb on the keys as well.  Be on the lookout for S1’s debut solo project, The Music Box, coming real soon.

Spotted on S1’s blog.
