John Legend & The Roots ft. Melanie Fiona & Common – Wake Up Everybody (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on August 21st, 2010 by Hyphen

New visuals by Gil Green for the lead single from John Legend and the Roots’ collaborative project covering classic soul records.  The old school shots in this one look great…as does Melanie Fiona, but you already knew that.

John Legend & The Roots ft. Melanie Fiona & Common – Wake Up Everybody

Posted in Artists, Joints on July 18th, 2010 by Hyphen

I don’t post up too many single joints these days, but when a collaboration like John Legend and the Roots comes along, it’s cause for a celebration.  Plus the homies at Columbia specifically asked and I’m hoping for some inter-office label drama between the old “internet is dead” Prince style execs and the ones that actually understand the new model.  Be on the lookout for a possible appearance from JL & ?uest on SNSS soon!

Aloe Blacc – Billie Jean (video)

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on June 25th, 2010 by Hyphen

(word to Darius Lovehall)

I’m always amazed when I see/hear how dope Aloe is singing, because I used to bump his older stuff when he was really just killing it on the MC tip.  What an incredible artist…and speaking of which, RIP to the King.

Also, be sure to check out the newest issue of Jenesis Magazine for a dope feature (including the cover!) on yours truly.  They decided to highlight me in their “DJ’s vs. Bloggers Issue,” since I suppose I qualify as both.  Coming off the heels of our article in the Seattle P.I., this is again, quite flattering.  You can grab the magazine right here.

Lykke Li x Rick Ross

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on January 21st, 2009 by Hyphen

Hmm…not sure how I feel about this.  On one hand, Lykke Li is the ish and I love this chick.  On the other hand, I hate the whole “haha let’s have white people do something hip-hop and let’s all laugh” schtick.  I mean, we’ve seen her do covers of A Tribe Called Quest before, and those were dope, but I don’t think I needed to see her and Bjorn from Peter, Bjorn, and John remake Ricky Rawwwwwwss.  Yeah…I’m good (I’m gone).

Seattle people: Lykke will be back in town at the Showbox in February.  I’ll see y’all there.

Barack on Rolling Stone (again)

Posted in Politics on June 27th, 2008 by Hyphen

Barack

Chyea, you know how we do.

The media studies major in me instantly noticed that they have him smiling at his much talked about flag pin.  I’m sure the haters will (incorrectly) try to twist that into some sort of “he’s LOL’ing at America!!!!” criticism, but I think it represents something else.  Even though he “gave in” and donned the pin, he’s smiling at how silly politics are in our country.  The fact that whether or not you wear a pin dominates headlines for months, while America turns into the Titanic says a whole lot about our society.  If we continue to concern ourselves with trivial ish, we’re gonna sink.  It’s time to educate ourselves, study the issues, and vote for the candidate we believe in.  Aight?

Zo! and Tigallo Love The 80’s (artwork)

Posted in Artists, Joints on June 24th, 2008 by Hyphen

Zo! and Tigallo

Hahahahaha, I can’t wait for this.  If you’re sleeping, Phonte from Little Brother is teaming up with the immensely talented Zo! to drop an EP full of classic 1980’s remakes later this year. They just put out the cover artwork and it pretty much sums up the project perfectly.  Here are the tracks that they’ve leaked so far:

Zo! and Tigallo – “Africa”
Zo! and Tigallo – “Steppin’ Out”
Zo! and Tigallo ft. Carlitta Durand – “Take On Me”

Stay up to date with Zo! and Tay at the project’s MySpace page.  I know Percy Miracles died a while ago, but I hope he makes an appearance on this.  Perhaps they have something from the vaults…

Sidenote: the audacity of putting an exclamation mark at the end of your name is freaking fantastic.  You’re literally forced to be excited when talking about Zo!!  See?  Brilliant.
