Sound Session #551 (5/8/16)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on May 12th, 2016 by Hyphen

What up y’all, hope you’re having a good week.  Perhaps not Steph Curry good, but hopefully still good nonetheless.  Props to the Blazers but watching Steph rip out their hearts (politely) the last two games has been incredible to watch.  If OKC manages to oust the Spurs, can you imagine how hard Russ is going to play to try to show the world he’s on Steph’s level?  And all the while, he has to show some mental restraint and get KD involved.  This should be a fascinating series to watch, but I’m also not killing off the White Walkers Spurs yet.

Anyway, enough basketball (blasphemy).  Here’s the latest episode of SNSS featuring great new cuts from ScienZe (exceptional album), Bas, Freeway, Skepta, LEISURE, Kaytranada, George Maple, James Blake, RAYE, Problem, DJ Quik, Yuna, GoldLink, and more.  Special throwback because I choose to remember Lauryn for what she once was, not the caricature she has become…

John Forte & Talib Kweli – Homecoming

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Music Videos on January 28th, 2009 by Hyphen

He’s back!  Thanks to literally one of the only good things Bush ever did, John Forte has been pardoned and is already back in the studio.  Here’s a quick little video of John and Talib rocking over Kanye’s “Homecoming.”  People may think of John’s verse on “We’re Tryin’ To Stay Alive” and forget his other stuff, but this dude could really rhyme.  I hope he picks up right where he left off.  Welcome home.

Rolling Stone retrospective on Lauryn’s Miseducation

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews on August 26th, 2008 by Hyphen

Miseducation

Oh sorry, not Lauryn…Ms. Hill.  *shakes head*.  Since it’s the 10 year anniversary of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill dropping, Rolling Stone spoke to many of the people involved in making the record, including John Legend, D’Angelo, Pras, her husband Rohan Marley, and Hill herself.  If you’re as big a fan of this album as I am (top 5 dead or alive), you’ll enjoy a lot of the behind the scenes stories.  You’ll also be saddened by the outcome.  I really hope we get a legit sophomore record from Lauryn, but that still seems unlikely.  Having interviewed Clef a few times in the last year, that Fugee record doesn’t seem plausible either.  It all depends on L-Boogie and she’s just not at the right place to do this again.

Check out the article here…highly recommended.  Thanks to Eskay for the heads up.

Wyclef Jean on Sound Session (again!)

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Live Performances, Politics, Sound Session, Videos on August 11th, 2008 by Hyphen

(if you prefer YouTube, go here)

The same day that Kardinal Offishall came through the Sound Session studios, Wyclef Jean stopped by for his second appearance on the show.  If you missed the first interview, you can find it on our podcast page right here.  Since we discussed his recent album, Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant, last time, we got to have a much more in depth convo with Clef during this interview.

Some people have criticized his recent hip-hop work and his forays into pop, but Clef will always be one of my favorite artists.  Without exaggeration, I’d rank both the original Carnival and the Fugees’ The Score in my top 5 albums of all time, and maybe even higher.  Perhaps I’m in the minority there, but any way you slice it, they’re classics.  Plus, he was my very first interview back in 2000 when he headlined the MTV Campus Invasion tour during my college radio days (KSPC what up!).  Dude was cool as hell then, and it’s the same today.

In this interview, Clef told us some stories behind his favorite songs from the past, why the Fugees reunion failed, what it’ll take to make it happen, how he’s seen the industry change over the years, how his music reaches around the world, his charity work, politics, and much more.  Plus, just like last time, he wouldn’t leave without dropping a little freestyle for us.  Though I must say, he was the one who wanted to use “A Milli.”  Lord knows it’s been rapped over enough, especially since it’s not even a great beat…at all…but I digress.

You can either watch the interview above (not recommended, since the audio is sketchy), or listen to the broadcast feed below (mixed in with beats & songs).  I’d check the mp3 if I were you:

I also tossed in some footage of Clef recording the freestyle at the end of the interview video.  If you just want to watch that part or download the song, here you go:

Wyclef Jean – “A Milli Freestyle (Sound Session Exclusive)”

Caribbean swagger…big up to Clef.

The Fugees on RapCity (Canada), Pt. 2

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on August 5th, 2008 by Hyphen

The second part of the interview with Wyclef, Lauryn, and Pras in Toronto from 1994 (first part here).  Still crazy to think this happened almost 15 years ago.  Can you imagine if the Fugees stayed together?  I think they’d be right there challenging Outkast as the greatest group of all time.  Without exaggeration, The Score, The Carnival, and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill are all in my top 10, easily.  Look out for a new interview with Clef this weekend where he reflected a lot on these “good ol’ days.”

Fugees interview from 1994

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews on July 16th, 2008 by Hyphen

The Meaning of Dope (one of the illest blogs out there) just posted up this great footage of Wyclef, Lauryn, and Pras being interviewed in Toronto in 1994. Hard to believe that’s almost 15 years ago! Seattle people – Clef will be here with Kardinal Offishall at the Showbox on Monday. Should be a hot show, don’t miss it.

Sidenote: watching them hit that juicebar has inspired me to get a smoothie, sounds good as hell on a hot day.
