Nardwuar interviews/terrifies Nasir

Posted in Artists, Comedy, Other Peoples' Interviews on August 27th, 2009 by Hyphen

As someone who has interviewed a lot of these folks that Nardwuar assaults, these are equal parts fascinating and horrifying to me.  They’re not really informative in the traditional sense, but at least their entertaining. I’m still waiting until he really uncovers some long lost skeletons though: “Do you remember the night you spent with a stripper in Atlanta in 1996? No? Well have we got a surprise for you…Nasir, Jr., come on in…”

I’m just glad I wasn’t the interviewer who had to go next…

Holler @ a Hyphey 🙂

Slaughterhouse on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session, Videos on August 25th, 2009 by Hyphen

(watch on HyphenTV)

While in town for our abridged version of Rock The Bells on the 14th, Slaughterhouse came through the Sound Session studio to kick it with J. Moore and myself.  Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, and Royce Da 5’9″ talked all about their Slaughterhouse project, while Crooked I was in another studio recording a verse for a Seattle artist. They also discussed the differences recording solo vs. as a group, if they felt any competition in the booth, who they’d pick in their own super groups, why real lyricists need to be back on the radio, and more.

To listen to the full interview, check the audio below:

Go cop the album and support 4 of the hardest working and dopest MC’s in the game, period.

Slum Village – Actin’ Normal (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on August 12th, 2009 by Hyphen

Well this came out of nowhere.  Peep this Dwele directed video for a brand new Slum Village song produced by Karriem Riggins.  Seems like there may have been more, but after Baatin’s untimely passing, perhaps the video and song were cut short to highlight Titus.  RIP.

Seattle people: Don’t forget that we have our (abridged version of) Rock The Bells on Friday at Showbox Market.  Reflection Eternal, Slaughterhouse, Slum Village, Pete Rock, and a few others.  Holler @ a Hyphen when you see me there.

The Knux on Sound Session (Appearance #2)

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Live Performances, Sound Session on May 25th, 2009 by Hyphen

As I mentioned in the post for the most recent Sound Session, Krispy and Al from the Knux came through the studio to kick it and co-host last night’s show.  We talked about their next album, upcoming tour plans, an all-star remix to their “F!re” track that’s in the works, the Twitter phenomenon, and more. Plus, they even kicked a quick freestyle live over the air.

You can watch part of the interview above (including the freestyle) and/or download the audio below:

Murs – Lookin’ Fly (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos, Samples on October 7th, 2008 by Hyphen

Well, this is embarrassing.  Not the video itself, and certainly not Murs’ song, but you see all that footage inside the metal barriers from what appears to be the desert?  Yeah, that would be the Washington stop of the Rock The Bells tour down at the Gorge.  I think the only positive aspect of seeing all my fellow NW’ers look like idiots wild out in front of the camera is that my dudes got their “Wake Up and Smell The Hip-Hop” shirt in a Murs video.  That’s whassup.  Actually, this reminds me…I have random RTB footage to edit…I should probably get on that.

Seattle people:  be sure to catch Murs and Kidz In The Hall at Nectar on Saturday.  It’s gonna be a great show and it’s a weekend so you have no excuses.  I’ll leave you with a little treat courtesy of Kevin Nottingham‘s excellent blog:

Honestly, I’m amazed Phonte and Brainchild have time for these excellent podcasts.  I always feel like I’m incredibly busy and constantly have projects to finish, but I know these guys do as well.  The fact that they do all their work and put out these episodes of GGR so often shows you how much they love the music.

Q-Tip – Gettin’ Up (official video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on September 12th, 2008 by Hyphen

While an unofficial video for this leaked a while back, here’s the real deal.  I dig this song, but something about the Greg Nice style rhyming kinda annoys me, I can’t front.  Still good to see Tip coming with another album and it was dope to see him at Rock The Bells last weekend.  Here’s an ill pic of Mos Def pointing out Tip’s lyrics to “Excursions” as he spit ’em.  Ill.

Mos & Tip

Shout to Dreezy for the great picture…

Q-Tip – Gettin’ Up (video)

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Music Videos on August 26th, 2008 by Hyphen

New unofficial video for Tip’s “Gettin’ Up” single swiped from OKP.  Speaking of Q-Tip and Rock The Bells, despite a bit of a scare, it’s now confirmed: A Tribe Called Quest WILL be performing at RTB in Washington! Whew, that was a close one.  September 6th at the Gorge, be there!

Murs & 9th speak on Sweet Lord (part 2)

Posted in Artists, Videos on August 19th, 2008 by Hyphen

“We have to expose the world to good music or we will all die of stupidity cause rap is really dumb right now”

Say word.  As promised, here’s the second part of Murs and 9th Wonder discussing their most recent collaborative effort, Sweet Lord.  Again, you should download the project immediately since it’s free, and be on the lookout for Murs For President on Sept. 30th.  NW’ers, you can catch Murs at Rock The Bells on the 6th.  Be there.
