Curren$y & Nardwuar are BFF’s

Posted in Comedy, Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on May 27th, 2011 by Hyphen

First came the above interview at SXSW and with Curren$y recently completing his Pacific Northwest trip, Nardwuar posted the follow up:

Nardwuar is obviously legendary, but for his bits to work, he needs the interviewee to play along. There have been plenty of good examples, but the interaction between these two is on another level. Plus, Curren$y’s personality is high comedy, no pun.

I heart British people

Posted in Comedy, News, Videos on April 30th, 2011 by Hyphen

When I woke up yesterday and begrudgingly started getting ready for work, I noticed my Twitter and Facebook timelines were filled with friends expressing their extreme hatred for all the media coverage of Will & Kate’s royal wedding.  Even though my dad is British and I have family there, honestly, I had no idea the wedding was even going down, let alone that it was this big of a deal…or at least that the media was trying to make it such an event.

While I understand why folks were so perturbed, I really couldn’t care less about the wedding or the media’s coverage of it.  Yeah, they blew it up to an absurd degree.  Um, that’s what they do.  Perhaps I’m a jaded media studies major, but I don’t see why any of this is surprising or discouraging.  Instead of getting annoyed by the coverage, I watched a little last night and above all, it reminded me how much I heart British people.  The wedding was so old fashioned…so banal…so proper…and the people looked so…utterly miserable.  THAT, my friends, is the British society I know and love.

I could write pages trying to explain the nuances of it all, but I think this Kate Middleton For The Win Tumblr site sums it all up brilliantly in every simple photo edit.  Go there.  Immediately!

In related news, I caught up on The Daily Show episodes I missed this week and I particularly enjoyed John Oliver returning to London to cover the wedding:

Emily Pilloton interview on the Colbert Report

My nerd crush on Ms. Pilloton aside (smart women FTW), this is awesome.

In short, she graduated from Berkeley trained as an architect, but after working a few years in “the real world” making conventional goods, she realized she wanted to do more.  At 26, she founded Project H Design, a non-profit created to put design innovation to better use.  Rather than focus on making money, Project H seeks “the triple bottom line: planet, people, & profit.”

As a post grad that’s been disillusioned with the rat race from time to time myself, I love that she took a chance and put her ideals first.  It’s actually not that different from our mindset with Sound Session…well, in terms of doing work you believe in, rather than “selling out” if you well.  Kudos to Emily and if you’d like to read more or become involved, check out their site.

Here’s a great presentation of hers from last year that explains things a little further:

Seattle people: it looks like they have a chapter here in the 206, so if you’re looking for some direction in life and have extra time on your hands, you know what to do.

Cheatin’ Unleashed

Hahahaha classic.  I’m not a gamer at all (still only have an old X-Box), but G4 is my new favorite network.  This one came from their X-Play show. That show is dope, but Attack of the Show is where it’s at.  Completely hilarious, plus I’m in love with Olivia Munn.  Talk about wifey material.

Chris Rock on Real Time with Bill Maher

Posted in Comedy, Politics, Videos on September 27th, 2008 by Hyphen

Gotta love that ‘related videos’ feature on YouTube, right?  As long as we’re posting up recent Chris Rock videos, here’s his appearance on Bill Maher’s Real Time after last night’s debate.  He reuses a few of the jokes from Larry King, but there’s still some great new stuff in there.  Chris is always hilarious and on point as well.

Everyone’s asking where Sarah Palin is after this debate (answer: stowed safely away in Area 51), but I want to know where Dave Chappelle is.  I would love to hear his take on all this.

RIP George Carlin

Posted in Comedy, News, Videos on June 24th, 2008 by Hyphen

Damn, right after Tim Russert passes, we lose another great figure in the media world.  One of the greatest comedians of all time, George Carlin, died on Sunday night due to heart failure.  He was an inspiration to virtually every contemporary comedian we have today and the world just got a lot less funny after his passing.  Here’s one of my favorite bits of his, the classic “baseball vs. football” routine:

Greatness. Back in college, I was lucky enough to take a course called “History of Laughter,” taught by the illustrious Barry Sanders (no, not that one…this one).  He focused a lot of the class around his experiences growing up and idolizing one of Carlin’s heroes, Lenny Bruce.  Anyone who understands the importance of laughter to the human condition knows how impactful Bruce and Carlin were to both comedy and popular culture.  True geniuses.  RIP George.
