The latest edition of GGR with Phonte and Brainchild dropped last week, but hey…life is busy.  Even if it’s a few days late on TAOD, the music is still as fresh as ever.  Plus, any mix that starts with an artist named Dorian gets posted.  Fact.

In celebration of his brother Big Pooh’s recent wedding, Phonte discusses his third time as a groomsman, how not wearing a wedding ring can build a healthy marriage, and how to use the word ‘bitch’ in a positive way.

Exile & DJ Day – Dope Man (live in Seattle)

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on March 26th, 2009 by Hyphen

Here’s some footage shot by the legendary JKim at the Seattle release party for Exile’s Radio at Nectar Lounge.  This was a dope night all around – DJ Day and Ex killed their set, and I judged the Qualified Beat Battle.  Congrats again to the winner, Ohmega Watts, and shout to all those involved with putting on a great night.

Be on the lookout for Exile’s appearance on SNSS soon…more homies who were down at SXSW!

Exile – “A Milli” (video)

illlllllllll

Criminally underrated producer Exile is dropping his new album Radio in January and he’s been shooting some of these ill promo videos leading up to the release.  In this edition, he chops up Lil’ Wayne and some Hiero to show you what true mpc mastery looks like.  Weezy never sounded so good.

Shout to the homey Jon Kim for sending this through.

Musiq ft. Mary J. Blige – IfULeave

Posted in Artists, Joints, Music Videos on October 22nd, 2008 by Hyphen

See Musiq, was that so hard?  After the debacle that was “Radio,” I’m glad to see one of my favorite R&B singers bounce back with a solid single.  It’s not my favorite Musiq track, and I’ve never been a big fan of Mary, but at least it gives me hope that his album won’t be a complete departure from his style.

Musiq – Radio (video)

Musiq – “Radio”

This is so wack.  Not only is the song awful, but it’s such an obvious attempt to pander to the dumbed down radio audience.  Horrible beat, horrible melody, horrible lyrics, and a blatantly moronic hook.  I know some of y’all thought this song was a joke of some sort when I first posted it up, but it looks like Musiq is really going to put all of us through this.  I’m looking forward to hearing the album (apparently titled Aijuswanaselle), but if there’s any more crap like this on it, I’m taking him off my list of favorite singers.  “I’m not mad Musiq…I’m…I’m disappointed.”

And just cause I can’t leave you with that atrocity, peep a flashback to the better times.

Musiq – Radio (what is this?)

Posted in Artists, Joints on June 16th, 2008 by Hyphen

Musiq

(i felt the same way)

This is just sad. One of my favorite singers out there just dropped a new joint. Swiped from 2DopeBoyz:

Musiq – “Radio”

Nothing more disappointing than hearing an artist you really dig make a blatant attempt to fit in with a popular sound. It’s so far from his style, it’s ridiculous. Hopefully this won’t end up being the first single from his next project.

GGR

Yes! Another episode of Phonte and Brainchild’s always entertaining podcast, Gordon Gartrell Radio (I love that they made ID’s and a logo for this…greatness). I haven’t had time to listen to it yet, but here’s Tay’s description of the episode:

Phonte reflects on Father’s Day by saluting the greatest sitcom daddies of all time*, explaining the difference between a father and a daddy, and by giving the 2008 Ed O.G. “Be A Father To Your Child” Award to a worthy recipient.

*Phonte would like everyone to know that he discovered later on that Alan Thicke did not sing the “Growing Pains” and “Diff’rent Strokes” theme songs, but he did co-write them!

  1. Nicolay “Body
  2. Xscape “The Softest Place On Earth”
  3. Jon B “They Don’t Know”
  4. Ginuwine “I’ll Do Anything / I’m Sorry”
  5. Angie Stone “Wish I Didn’t Miss You”
  6. Mpho Skeef “What Hearts Share”
  7. Atjazz “Put It On” (feat. Ernesto) (Osunlade Remix)
  8. Spymusic “Din Daa Daa”
  9. Little Brother “Do It To Death” (Instrumental)
  10. Darien Brockington “He Will Break Your Heart” (Instrumental)
  11. Khrysis “Sunflower’s Lament”
  12. Foreign Exchange “Von Sees” (Instrumental)
  13. Idle Warship “Fall Back” (feat. Chester French)
  14. Masta Ace Incorporated “Born To Roll”

  19. Stephanie Mills & Teddy Pendergrass “Two Hearts”

Download here.

Props to Tay for the “Be A Father To Your Child” reference. We kicked off Sound Session with that last night…I’m working on getting the audio of our last show up for y’all ASAP.  Happy belated Father’s Day to all the dads out there.

And if you’re a young’n and confused about the name of GGR, peep game:
