The Audacity of Dope

This has been my jam for months now, and they finally dropped a video for it.  Jazmine Sullivan is a 21 year old singer from Philly, where she first broke on to the scene with her performances at the famed Black Lily showcases.  This is her lead single for her upcoming debut on J Records.  Let’s hope she keeps this vibe and doesn’t get Missy too involved.  Here’s the mp3 if you need it:

I don’t think anyone is spitting harder than Reks right now, other than perhaps Royce.  He’s attacking every beat like his life depended on it, and this DJ Premier track is no different.  If you’re a Sound Session listener, you know we’ve been playing lots of Reks material over the last few years.  If you’re a Hyphen stalker, you know I used to play his old Brick Records 12″s back on my college radio show from 2000 to ’04.  Either way, be happy you’re up on him now.  Reks’ new album, Grey Hairs, drops July 22nd and it’s [M.O.P] FIYAAAAAAAAAA [/M.O.P.].

Asher seems to be polarizing hip-hop listeners left and right. Either people think he’s dope, or they hate his very existence. Personally, I think he’s pretty nice with it. This is a video he made for the “Roc Boys” freestyle joint he flipped on his mixtape (which you can download here if you haven’t already). Dude’s whole steez reminds me of college, except he can actually rhyme…unlike all the brosephs I went to school with. I’m looking forward to seeing the moves he makes, though I’m not sure throwing some shots at Jigga is the best way to introduce yourself to a whole lot of people…

Respect to Kaze for dropping the Nutso reference. Cinematic quality aside, “Above The Rim,” is my favorite movie of all time! “Nutsooooooooooooooooooooooooo” (The way “Pain” opens the movie is so ill)

I was working out & listening to Harlem World yesterday and while the album is a personal classic, I heard this line I had apparently erased from memory:

I remember this dropping when I was a sophomore in high school, and I loved damn near every track. I ain’t ashamed. This is still my JAM:

“Boo, you know how many he meet with no panties?”…ah, good times.

You just can’t go wrong with Dwele and Slum Village.  Every one of their collaborations has been dope, and this joint is no different.  T3 and (the rhyming god that is) Elzhi hop on Dwele’s new single, “I’m Cheatin’.”  I would have liked some longer verses, and perhaps a remixed beat…you know, like “remixes” were meant to be…but this is still the jam.

I saw this over at RealTalkNY, and I’m posting it for 3 reasons.

1. When I first heard this joint about 6 weeks ago, “Lollipop” and “Love In This Club,” were the two biggest songs in the country (might still be I guess), and this song struck me as such a blatant attempt to combine the two. I think it could definitely be a hit as well, but I loathe clear cut cases of swagger jacking. [Mark Jackson] You’re better than that, Berg. [/Mark Jackson]
2. Berg’s Transformers chain is crazy…though it’s a little sad how many times he tries to show it off in this video. I guess I would too, that thing’s crushing Sean Kingston’s Crayola nonsense.
