The Audacity of Dope

Yes y’all, another dope edition of Sunday Night Sound Session for you to enjoy if you weren’t able to catch it live.  Or if you did, and you just want to relive the glorious night, you’re in luck.  Ok ok, perhaps it wasn’t a life changing event, but you know we had to hold you down as always with the best new music of the week.  We played great songs from artists like Black Milk, Evidence, Common, Jay-Z, Kanye West, and more, plus debuted new tracks from Nipsey Hussle, Blaq Poet, and the longtime homies, U-N-I.  Thurz & Y-O were even in town yesterday for a concert, so while they had to rock the stage while SNSS was on air, we did get a chance to record a nice interview that I’ll post up ASAP.

In the meantime, peep this episode for all that music, including a snippet of an interview we did a while back with West Coast legend Murs.  Again, I’ll post the entire interview (and video) soon.  We were also joined in studio by the local group Clockwork and some of Portland’s finest, Braille, Othello, and Ohmega Watts, collectively known as Lightheaded.  Braille even stuck around and dropped a dope (legit) freestyle off the dome to help us close the show.  You can watch it below.  Enjoy!

I’ve mentioned before that I don’t particularly enjoy acapella “freestyles,” but the homey Alex over at Ruby Hornet always picks dope MC to kick verses for his videos.  In this edition, Blu recites another crazy verse and Chicago’s own Astonish joins in at the end.  If you don’t know, Astonish dropped a great project last year that a lot of you slept on.  Check him out here and get familiar.

Brand new freestyle joint from 1/3rd of the mighty A.R.M. (what up Budo!  what up M.anifest!), the immensely talented Krukid.  You really need to peep how he rips Kanye’s beats and drops some insightful, educational ish about voting in this year’s election at the same time.  It was already my kind of track, and then Krukid went ahead and blessed The Audacity of Dope with a shout too?  Aw man, it’s a wrap.  Thanks homey!

Damn, Ali spit better off the dome than most rappers do with their writtens.  Well, wait…maybe they aren’t even writing and that’s the problem.  Anyway, Ali [hip-hop talk] gets it in [/corny] with Mr. Peter Parker on B96 in Minneapolis over a medley of beats.  His problem with “Grindin'” is funny, cause that’s exactly the issue the Clipse have every time they drop that song in concert.  Something about the way it comes in just isn’t right.  Anyway, Ali ripped this.  Seattle people: remember Ali will be at Jake One’s release party at the War Room on October 6th.  Be there.

Chyea.  The boys from LA flew out to the Chi and while out there, linked up with the homies from Ruby Hornet for an excellent edition of their “Freestyle In The Park” series.  As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a huge fan of acapella verses, but wow.  Like, BeYoung, and Mibbs murdered this and actually spit some ish off the dome, which is pretty refreshing these days.  “they say they looooove it.”

Ever since I saw those In Living Color skits with Jamie Foxx and David Alan Grier reciting “poetry from the hood,” this kind of stuff has been hilarious to me.  Shout to McFly for sending this over.

Hahahah. My man Don Cerino recently got featured on Loud Favorites and decided to spit some verses for random people in NYC (the Meatpacking District to be exact…definitely ‘pause‘-worthy). Not only is Don one of my favorite MC’s, but he’s hilarious too. Hit the jump to hear him talk about his background and upcoming projects. The homies over at Ruby Hornet continue their excellent “Freestyle In The Park” series with this edition featuring Tanya Morgan.  If you’re sleeping, Tanya Morgan Is A Rap Group and Von Pea and Donwill (shout to Ilyas) spit some verses from their latest EP, The Bridge.  You can also check out another page on Ruby Hornet where they break down the inspiration behind their “We Doin’ Our” cut, which astute listeners will remember hearing on Sound Session when it first dropped.
