Jhene Aiko – Eternal Sunshine (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on April 6th, 2015 by Hyphen

New visuals from Jhene from one of my favorite tracks off Souled Out.  Not only is it named after one of the best movies of all time, but I also love that she references one of my favorite life philosophies when she sings “the more that I know, I don’t know anything at all.”  It’s the same thought sometimes referred to as the Socratic Paradox, essentially stating, a wise man knows that he knows nothing.

If that wasn’t heavy enough, the video reenacts a real life car crash Jhene was in with her daughter and is also dedicated to he older brother, who died last year of a brain tumor.  So yeah…not exactly a happy go lucky record, but a dope one.

Sound Session #486 (10-5-14)

Posted in Episodes, Interviews, Sound Session on October 9th, 2014 by Hyphen

SNSS

On this week’s SNSS episode, we filled the show with a ton of great music from the likes of Joell Ortiz, Joey Bada$$, Fashawn, Dom Kennedy, Childish Gambino, Logic, Diamond D, Nottz, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, Jessie Ware, Tinashe, ODESZA, Gorgon City, Broods, and more.  Plus, Cozz called in, fresh off the heels of his Cozz & Effect album to talk all about the project, his background, his relationship with J. Cole, how he ended up signing with Dreamville, and more.  If you just want to peep that interview, you can check it right here.

On top of all that, we were joined in the second hour of the show by Anna Lunoe, a singer/producer/DJ from Sydney, Australia.  Anna played the Neptune Theater earlier in the evening and then dropped by the studio to co-host with us and talk about her new EP, All Out.  We played a couple tracks off it (the excellent title track and a crazy record with Jesse Boykins III) and then learned a bit about her experiences as an artist coming up in Australia and how she fell in love with music.  It was a really enjoyable conversation (if you want to peep just the parts with Anna, click here) and the whole show had a great vibe.  Hope y’all enjoy it!

Cozz – Cody Macc (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on October 4th, 2014 by Hyphen

I always enjoy seeing new talent come out the gate spitting hungry AF and that’s what you’re seeing with Cozz, J. Cole’s newest signing to Dreamville.  The most amazing part of this video is that they actually got shots of Los Angeles without any cars driving around in the background.  But on the real, peep Cozz’s abum that just dropped, Cozz & Effect, and watch out for an appearance on SNSS real soon.

Problem on Sound Session (video)

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on September 25th, 2014 by Hyphen

Problem traveled up the west coast from L.A. to Seattle and dropped by the KUBE 93 studios to chop it up with us for Sound Session on 9/10/14.

We discussed his background, how he originally started by producing on a PlayStation, how he started rapping for chicks, and how he developed arguably the best ad-lib in rap (WHAT!?!).  After talking about his past, he spoke on his upcoming album, “Karma,” and Diamond Lane Music Group’s strategy to make it his biggest release yet.  And as you might expect with a passionate LA native, the conversation ended with Problem explaining why Kobe is the greatest Laker of all time and who’s better, Kobe or MJ.

Big shout to Problem and all of Diamond Lane Music Group, plus the First Ladies for shooting/editing!

Freddie Gibbs on KUBE 93’s Sound Session (video)

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on May 30th, 2014 by Hyphen

One of the dopest MC’s in the game and one of the realest dudes in the industry, Freddie Gibbs has been one of our favorites for years on Sound Session.  We’ve ran into him numerous times but amazingly never had him in studio for a SNSS interview…until now.

Freddie came through the KUBE studios on 5/24/14 while in Seattle on tour with Tech N9ne and we chopped it up for a bit about his love for the city (its greenery and Seahawk Richard Sherman, in particular), growing up and starting his rap career in a tough environment in Indiana, and later making the move to Los Angeles to pursue music.  We also talked about his approach to the industry and how he can appeal to a wide fan base, before touching on his recent projects with Madlib and DJ Fresh.

Peep the full interview above for more and be sure to catch Freddie when he’s in your town.  Shout to Archie for coordinating and the First Ladies for shooting and editing the piece.

Sound Session #465 (5-11-14) – 9 Year Anniversary

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on May 12th, 2014 by Hyphen

SNSS

Well, well, well, this sure snuck up on us.  This past episode of SNSS marked our 9 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!  We feel overwhelmingly blessed and privileged to be able to present SNSS to you each week, and many thanks are in order for our supporters and management at KUBE 93, plus all our listeners in the local community and worldwide.  We’re here 100% for the music and culture, so it’s certainly not about us, but we’re flattered every time we reach one of these milestones.  Next up, show #500 and then next year, the SNSS 10 year anniversary.  We’ll definitely have something special planned for that one…

In the interim, we just keep on doing what we do.  Are we the Tim Duncan of independent hip-hop shows on commercial radio?  Perhaps, but since when is that a bad thing?  Hall of Fame numbers and hopefully this is just the beginning.  On this week’s episode, we were joined in studio by our homies V. Dot and Tasman Holloway (formerly known as Louis V), plus an emerging R&B singer from Tacoma, Kalieb Nash.  If you’re curious whether he can sing or saaaaaaing, check out the 2nd part of our interview where he laid down a little acapella for us.  That boy good.

Of course, we couldn’t do a show on Mother’s Day without paying homage to the women that brought us here and continue to make the world go around.  Hope you guys enjoy the multiple throwbacks and remember what Kanye said, “it don’t gotta be Mother’s Day, or your birthday / For me to just call and say Hey Mama.”  Give that lady a call if you’re blessed enough to still have her in your life.  Love you Mom.

Mila J – Smoke, Drink, Break-Up (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on March 22nd, 2014 by Hyphen

Jhene Aiko’s older sister, Mila J, returns to the music scene with the video for her lead single from M.I.L.A. (stands for Made In Los Angeles), “Smoke, Drink, Break-Up.”  Fans of that mid to late 90’s R&B sound should dig this one.
