The Audacity of Dope

As would only be fitting with a year like 2016 (gotta be one of the worst for the world in recent memory), we’ve had a string of difficulties broadcasting the show down the stretch.  Even with all the tech advances at our fingertips, doing Sound Session from the road for the last few months has been tricky, so apologies for the hiccups.  This episode is the last one of the year, as we’ll be taking the holiday season off and relaunching in 2017 with our Best of 2016 wrap up show.

In the meantime, here’s episode #580 featuring new music from artists like Common, The Roots, J. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the Sound Session team!  There’s about 15 minutes left on Christmas Day as I write this and after a few weeks of traveling (special shout to some of my good LA friends that I saw last week, Enrique and Brian from Interscope), then the craziness of the holidays, I’m finally feeling like I can relax and catch up on things.  Hopefully you all had a great holiday and got to spend time with your friends and family, and you’re not working like I am.

The homegirl Chok recently released a holiday themed EP (cop it here) and here are some visuals for one of the records. Not only is the song dope and the video cleanly shot, but the message included really sums up what the holiday season should be all about. Well done Chok!

I didn’t think I’d like this, but they won me over with a few of the lines (“I’m Wale’s secret Santa” and Drake’s intonation on “liiiIIIIIIFE!”) and a few impressions in particular (Big Sean, Beyonce, J. Cole, Kreayshawn, Birdman, Drake, and Wyclef). J. Cole receiving a basketball as a gift was golden too. Pretty good stuff overall.

For better or worse, this week’s SNSS archive is coming to you live from my “vacation,” down in sunny San Diego.  In reality, I don’t think anyone in the music industry, or even anyone under about 40, takes a traditional vacation anymore, but at least I get to avoid the office for a week.  Plus, the winter weather in SoCal is a bit nicer than the old Pacific NW.  The hammock and the hot tub don’t hurt either…

I’ve been meaning to post this up since I went to Braille’s “Everybody Say Ho!!!” event last week here in Seattle (Portland people, yours is this Friday, details here).  It was a real dope show and I even got to catch up with some old friends from way back in the day.  Plus, the Frosty the Snowman vs. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer battle was classic.  You think I’m jokin’.
