J. Pinder – Careless Redux (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on November 29th, 2012 by Hyphen

Yee!  New freshness from my guy Pinder.  TAOD and SNSS fam already know the deal, but if you’re sleeping:

After years of living, months of creating, weeks of preparation and sweeping Internet anticipation, J. Pinder’s “Careless Redux” is finally available for free download. Presented by DJ Skee—of KIIS-LA and Sirius XM fame—the 16 track mixtape is an impressively technical yet emotionally raw journey into the Seattle native’s comings and goings: through the club, through the industry, and through his city. Featuring vocal appearances by Musiq Soulchild, Marsha Ambrosius, Rapper Big Pooh, and Thurz, “Careless Redux” weaves together a wide range of beats from some of the best producers in the game: Vitamin D, DJ Khalil, Kuddie Fresh and Illmind.

Full of rewind-worthy moments, “Careless Redux” has a mood and a mission for every listener. Producers Mel & D and DJ Khalil collaborate with J. Pinder for “King,” an instant head-nodder that begs for a special sort of ride in the whip. On “Float’n,” J. Pinder rises to the occasion of Kuddie Fresh’s heartfelt strings and heartbeat drums, delivering a meditation on hard days and harder work. J. Pinder depicts his world with sharp story telling, polished mic skills and playful punchlines, transforming his world into everyone’s world.

The homegirl Chok recently released a holiday themed EP (cop it here) and here are some visuals for one of the records. Not only is the song dope and the video cleanly shot, but the message included really sums up what the holiday season should be all about. Well done Chok!

Bilal on Sound Session (Interview #2)

Posted in Interviews, Sound Session on November 26th, 2010 by Hyphen

Sound Session listeners will remember that about a month ago, we co-hosted the show with the legendary Bilal.  Loyal listeners will remember our first interview with him from last year, but this time around, we dedicated the whole episode to his music.  We played nothing but Bilal records all night, mixing a sampling of our favorite songs from all 3 of his classic albums, some b-sides, and guest appearances with his colorful and insightful commentary.  He even closed out the show with a live performance of “Levels” off his newest project, Airtight’s Revenge.

I posted the audio of the entire show previously (download here), but now I’ve got the accompanying video up for y’all if you’re so inclined.  Be sure to check out part three, where he performed “Levels” live on the air to close out the show.

Cop Bilal’s latest album, Airtight’s Revenge, if you haven’t already.  Another classic!

Sound Session #281 (10-17-10) (Co-hosted by Bilal)

Posted in Artists, Episodes, Interviews, Sound Session on October 19th, 2010 by Hyphen

[La Bamba] In the year 2000 [/Conan humor], I started working in radio at KSPC outside Los Angeles and as a college freshman, I was amazed by the freedom the indie broadcasting platform afforded me.  After looking through my personal collection, the music director was impressed and allowed me to play whatever I wanted, rather than being limited to the records in the station’s library.  As a result, my early playlists were filled with music from the Soulquarians, easily my favorite collective of artists back then…and still today.

Of all the classic albums they were involved with, perhaps the record I played the most was Bilal’s 1st Born Second.  Simply put, it’s flawless, front to back, and one of the most underrated pieces of music from the last 25 years.  If you would have told 18 year old Hyphen (who actually had a different, and horribly embarrassing nom de plume at the time) that I’d one day have Bilal co-host my radio show, I would have flipped.  Ok, I would have flipped twice: who knew I’d still be in radio 10 years later?  Shrug.

We’ve interviewed him before (peep it here), but it was a special honor to dedicate the entire episode of Sound Session this week to the genius that is Bilal Oliver.  We played nothing but Bilal records all night, mixing in a sampling of our favorite songs from all 3 of his classic albums, some b-sides, and guest appearances with his colorful and insightful commentary.  He even closed out the show with a live performance of “Levels” off his newest project, Airtight’s Revenge.

I’ll have the accompanying video up as soon as I can, but in the meantime, enjoy the audio.  Shout to Dru, JK, Hawk, Marc, and Chok for helping bring Bilal through the show.  Be sure to cop his albums if you haven’t already!

Show #281 (10-17-10)
**Co-hosted by Bilal**

  1. Bilal – “For You”
  2. Bilal – “Bring 2”
  3. Bilal – “Cake & Eat It Too”
  4. 88-Keys ft. Bilal – “M.I.L.F.”
  5. Bilal – “Think It Over”
  6. Bilal – “Sometimes”
  7. Bilal ft. Mos Def & Common – “Reminisce”
  8. Guru ft. Jay Dee & Bilal – “Certified”
  9. Bilal – “All Matter”
  10. Shafiq Husayn ft. Bilal – “Cheeba (Nottz Remix)”

D. Black on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on September 3rd, 2009 by Hyphen

D. Black and the Sport’n Life crew came through Sound Session recently to talk all about D’s upcoming Ali’Yah album that drops on the 15th.  Always a pleasure to open the SNSS studio up to dope artists, but it’s especially fun to chill with good people.  Download the whole audio of the show right here.

D.Black, a Seattle-based rising hip-hop artist, took some time out to visit the good folks J. Moore and DJ Hyphen over at KUBE 93 for Sunday Night Sessions to speak about his newest release Ali’Yah. While talking about Ali’Yah, D.Black made special note of the increase in maturity and artistic development since his last album. That maturity is evident on such songs as the recently released “Yesterday,” the first single off Ali’Yah, and when asked about the song D.Black explained the concept saying, “All of us have had situations in our past that if we look back at it, we breathe life back into it. So it’s better to leave yesterday behind and look forward to tomorrow.” The positive vibe was reflected back by the fans as well as D.Black spoke with a few folks who called. D.Black also spoke on the opportunity he had to work with so many talented artists while crafting Ali’Yah, noting the contributions of fellow artists Jake One, Vitamin D, B. Brown, Melissa, Choklate, Spaceman, Kuddie Mak and many others. Be on the lookout for D.Black’s newest album Ali’Yah available September 15th via Sport’n Life Records/MYX Music Label.

The Making of Nas & C-Sick’s “Film”…and the REAL mp3

Posted in Artists, Joints, Videos on August 4th, 2009 by Hyphen

By now, most of you have heard Nas’ collaboration with the 2009 Red Bull Big Tune champion, C-Sick, but I thought I’d post up the ill behind the scenes footage of the making of “Film.”  Above, you can peep a little background on C-Sick’s journey, while the two studio segments are below.

Also, neither of the 2 versions of the song that have leaked online so far are the final edit, so I’m posting that up too.  In case you’re living in the woods, my co-host on Sunday Night Sound Session, J. Moore, created the Red Bull Big Tune with Vitamin D, Jake One, DV-One, and Marcus Lalario.  The homies helped put this song together and even recruited Seattle’s own Choklate to sing the hook.  Due to sample clearance issues, C-Sick’s original beat had to be replayed, and you’ve yet to hear the final, official version of the track…until now.  Enjoy!

Choklate – Suns Out / Grown Folks (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos, Remixes, Videos on June 16th, 2009 by Hyphen

Awww yeah, the homegirl Chok just dropped the video for 2 joints off her new album, To Whom It May Concern.  Trust when I tell you that not only is she one of the most talented singers in our lovely city, but she’s right there at the top of the pack nationally.  People are starting to catch on, so hop on the bandwagon before you’re too late!

Also, you may remember the Vitamin D “Suns Out” beat from our Cornerstone Mixtape where Thig Natural of the Physics ripped a little freestyle intro.  Have you downloaded the tape yet?

And just in case you needed more proof that Seattle is jam packed full of talent, peep this video of KDCutz remixing “Suns Out.”

Wow.

Butta Verses’ lost videos, BeanOne on the boards

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on August 26th, 2008 by Hyphen

Fort Lauderdale’s Butta Verses is an honorary member of our hip-hop community here in Seattle and he recently leaked some unreleased videos to the net. Above is “Round and Round” featuring Choklate (what up Chok!) and after the jump, you can catch the visuals for “Work.” Both joints are produced by the big homey BeanOne. Neither of these songs will be on Butta’s new album, Reality BV, dropping September 16th, but look out for a video for the single, “If I Die,” coming real soon!
