Sound Session #549 (4/24/16)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on May 5th, 2016 by Hyphen

Another day, another week’s archive for SNSS and we’re getting closer to being all caught up.  Plus, the audio is sounding extra nice, and will, from here on out, now that we’re getting things set up properly in our new studio.  Episode #550 will be coming soon too, but in the meantime, enjoy this one.

New cuts from Royce Da 5’9″, John Crown, Domo Genesis, Phife, The Age of L.U.N.A., Avelino, Elzhi, dvsn, Suede Brown, Snoh Aalegra, Musiq, Kanye, Sol, and more.  I’m not even ashamed of my guilty pleasure tracks either: that Rihanna is fire and the Travis Scott remix of MadeInTyo’s “Uber Everywhere” is, for lack of a better term, lit.  Hov throwback since I felt bad that an entire generation seems to just knows him as Bey’s husband.

Grab the show below:

Sound Session #477 (8-3-14)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on August 6th, 2014 by Hyphen

Two SNSS updates back to back!  Here’s episode #477, where we played new records from Camp Lo, M.O.P., Cormega, AZ, Redman, Styles, G-Unit, Common, DTMD, Your Old Droog, Macklemore, FKA twigs, Sam Smith, Majid Jordan, and more.  In honor of Jay-Z and Beyonce performing in Seattle last week…and obviously not seeing him perform some of his older classics…we hopped in the way back machine for a throwback set of some Jay-Z classics.  The man has so much quality material, it’s really ridiculous when you start thinking about all the records…

We were also joined in studio by one of the most buzz-worthy artists in hip-hop right now, Seattle’s own Sam Lachow.  Every month, another major label calls me to ask about Sam, but so far, he’s been able to build everything up independently.  It’s a great route if you can do it and Sam’s excelling, with his new album, Huckleberry, reaching the iTunes top 5 hip-hop albums.  Go cop that.

Last, but not least, Seattle veteran Draze came through to play a record called “The Hood Ain’t The Same,” and speak on the important issue of gentrification.  One of the more enjoyable conversations we’ve had on the show recently.

Show #477 (8-3-14)

  1. Camp Lo – “Cold Retarded”
  2. M.O.P. – “187”
  3. Cormega ft. AZ, Redman, & Styles P – “MARS (Dream Team)”
  5. G-Unit – “Come Up”
  6. LE$ & Cookin’ Soul – “Keys”
  8. Sam Lachow ft. Raz Simone & Ariana DeBoo – “Dreams of Gold” (Local Music)
  9. Sam Lachow ft. Ariana DeBoo – “Stolen Bikes” (Local Music)
  11. Common ft. Elijah Blake – “Real”
  12. Big K.R.I.T. ft. Rico Love – “Pay Attention”
  13. Statik Selektah ft. Ab-Soul, Jon Connor, & Logic – “Alarm Clock”
  14. DTMD (Dunc & Toine Makin’ Dollas) ft. BOOM – “toine&B”
  15. THURZ ft. Kelsey Bulkin – “Perfect Words”
  16. Your Old Droog – “Good Times Are Hard To Come By These Days”
  18. Draze – “The Hood Ain’t The Same” (Local Music)
  20. Fences ft. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – “Arrows” (Local Music)
  21. Russ – “Comin Thru”
  22. Jay-Z – “Imaginary Player” (Throwback of the Week)

Clock Radio Speakers podcast with DJ Hyphen

Posted in Interviews, Other Peoples' Interviews, Radio, Sound Session on January 5th, 2014 by Hyphen

(you like that 3rd person blog title, don’t ya?)

The homies Doc and Armond do one of the best hip-hop podcasts around with their Clock Radio Speakers show and I was honored to be a guest on a recent episode of theirs.  Toss this on and listen to us nerd out about all sorts of topics, including rap’s fascination with radio play and how radio really works, Wale’s issues with Complex, “event” releases in 2013 from artists like Jay-Z and Beyonce, my #InboxMadness Twitter series, industry tastemakers, and a whole bunch more.  Just a fun discussion with some folks that truly love music.  Good times.

2-Cent Ent – 2¢XM∆$ Odd Christmas 2011 (spoof video)

Posted in Artists, Comedy, Music Videos on December 24th, 2011 by Hyphen

I didn’t think I’d like this, but they won me over with a few of the lines (“I’m Wale’s secret Santa” and Drake’s intonation on “liiiIIIIIIFE!”) and a few impressions in particular (Big Sean, Beyonce, J. Cole, Kreayshawn, Birdman, Drake, and Wyclef). J. Cole receiving a basketball as a gift was golden too. Pretty good stuff overall.

Order of appearances: Nicki Minaj, Big Sean, Plies, Rick Ross, Beyonce, J. Cole, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Tyler The Creator, Kreayshawn, Lil B, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Birdman, Drake, Wyclef Jean, Rihanna, and LMFAO.
