SNSS

Sorry for the delay on our recent SNSS episodes, but what can I say…life is hectic.  Show #517 technically marked our 10 YEAR SOUND SESSION ANNIVERSARY, which is, simply, a phenomenal achievement for an independent radio show broadcast on commercial station.  Hell, it’s a phenomenal achievement to do pretty much anything for a decade straight.  We decided to turn the rest of the month into a celebration, starting with the next show, which I’ll post up soon.  More to come on this…

For #517, we played a ton of good music from folks like Curren$y, Freddie Gibbs, Lion Babe, De La Soul, ASAP Rocky, Miguel, Mura Masa, Bas, Oddisee, Alina Baraz & Galimatias, Gallant, Nao, Kehlani, Kooley High, Made In Heights, and more.  Lots of dopeness in the mix.  Enjoy!

Sound Session #465 (5-11-14) – 9 Year Anniversary

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on May 12th, 2014 by Hyphen

SNSS

Well, well, well, this sure snuck up on us.  This past episode of SNSS marked our 9 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!  We feel overwhelmingly blessed and privileged to be able to present SNSS to you each week, and many thanks are in order for our supporters and management at KUBE 93, plus all our listeners in the local community and worldwide.  We’re here 100% for the music and culture, so it’s certainly not about us, but we’re flattered every time we reach one of these milestones.  Next up, show #500 and then next year, the SNSS 10 year anniversary.  We’ll definitely have something special planned for that one…

In the interim, we just keep on doing what we do.  Are we the Tim Duncan of independent hip-hop shows on commercial radio?  Perhaps, but since when is that a bad thing?  Hall of Fame numbers and hopefully this is just the beginning.  On this week’s episode, we were joined in studio by our homies V. Dot and Tasman Holloway (formerly known as Louis V), plus an emerging R&B singer from Tacoma, Kalieb Nash.  If you’re curious whether he can sing or saaaaaaing, check out the 2nd part of our interview where he laid down a little acapella for us.  That boy good.

Of course, we couldn’t do a show on Mother’s Day without paying homage to the women that brought us here and continue to make the world go around.  Hope you guys enjoy the multiple throwbacks and remember what Kanye said, “it don’t gotta be Mother’s Day, or your birthday / For me to just call and say Hey Mama.”  Give that lady a call if you’re blessed enough to still have her in your life.  Love you Mom.

Sound Session #258 (5-9-10)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on May 10th, 2010 by Hyphen

As I was jotting down this week’s playlist, I looked at the date and thought, “hmm…May…isn’t that supposed to signify something special?”  I suppose this is how married folks feel when anniversary time comes around (speaking of which, happy anniversary to the ‘rents! And Happy Mother’s Day as well! Love you guys).  You realize you’re supposed to do something, but you can’t remember exactly what.

After checking my ring finger, I realized, no…I’m not married…but damn, this past week marks 5 full years of Sound Session on the air at KUBE 93.  Our very first episode was on May 8th, 2005 and 257 shows later, here we are at May 9th, 2010.  Since we tend to keep track of milestones by episode rather than date, J. Moore and I didn’t even realize it until just now.  While we’re certainly proud of hosting an independent hip-hop show on commercial radio without compromising one iota for 5 years, as we’ve always maintained, everything we do actually has little to do with us.  Instead, it has everything to do with the artists, the listeners, the higher ups who believe in our abilities, and most importantly, the culture that we live and breathe every day.

Even when we play non-hip-hop records, we are hip-hop in our mindset, ideals, and actions.  The folks that can relate also know that you do what you do without any need for praise or recognition.  You do it because you don’t know any other way.  That’s Sound Session and that’s why 5 years have gone by in a blink of an eye.  Here’s to many more…
