Jhene took the crown from Cassie for my number 1 crush a while back and I’m happy to say she also wins that battle musically. Here’s her video for “Stranger” off sailing soul(s), which I’m hoping is only one of many. Especially if we can get visuals for “Hoe” with Miguel and Gucci Mane that remotely resemble the artwork. Yikes.
Side note: this song is obviously speaking about guys who always want the same thing, but as I’m going through #inboxmadness, I often think of this record. I do not need you, rappers, yet I meet you every day!

Any record using the classic Dilla “Let’s Ride” drums is always going to get my head nodding (shout to my guy Tunji too), and I so desperately need more of this grown, genuine, soulful music in my world.
This video dropped a few weeks ago, but you already know what #inboxmadness is all about. Better late than never though, especially since this Fly.Union record is one of my favorite songs of the year. Crazy beat, nice verses, and a catchy, smooth hook.

I find it kind of comical that so many people, myself and even Lupe included, had issues with various elements of L.A.S.E.R.S. and yet it’s been an incredibly successful commercial album for him. “The Show Goes On” is one of the biggest chart topping records of the year and the new single, “Out Of My Head,” is getting considerable airplay as well. Hopefully that continues now that the video is out.

While I don’t anticipate ever being able to play this on Sound Session since a clean version would essentially turn in to an instrumental, this joint is dope. One of the reasons why we should be rooting for Kendrick to continue to blow up is that unlike many of the other new artists, K-Dot seems to take more chances with his music. There’s a lot of talented cats killing it right now, but not too many seem to have the ability to make a 5 mic hip-hop classic. Kendrick does. We’ll see if he’s able to reach that potential, but with the release of Section.80, he continues his ascent.
