The Audacity of Dope

The homeboy Jon Jon is currently down in Los Angeles learning all sorts of incredible film-making techniques to take his productions to the next level, so I think he’s falling back from music videos for a little while.  That said, he’s got a few more in the stash, starting with the debut video for B.o.B’s right hand man, and all around funny guy/dope MC/crazy hook writer, Playboy Tre.  What up fellas?!

Bobby Ray flips the classic Tribe track for his edition of the Reebok Classic series and absolutely murders the hook.  Super catchy.  Shout to the Cornerstone folks, B Rich, Tre, and TJ…dope job fellas.

I’ve been waiting for this mixtape for a minute, and not only did it drop, but TJ, B Rich, Bobby Ray, Tre, and the crew released it in the always clutch “No DJ” format.  It pains me as a DJ to say this, but 99% of time when a DJ is involved with a project with new material these days, it’s a detriment.  If you really want a DJ on your tape, just have him (or her…hi ladies) mix it cohesively and don’t let them get on the mic.  You can download my old tape with Amen if you’re curious to see how a DJ can actually help the project.  Shocking, I know.

Anyway, enough ranting.  Peep B.o.B’s new tape where he continues to bend genres and explore his Bobby Ray side.  This dude might be the most musically gifted of all the ‘new’ MC’s and he’s certainly one of my favorite artists right now.

The homey Playboy Tre just dropped his new mixtape, Liquor Store Mascot, as a free download for y’all.  If you’ve been sleeping, Tre rolls with B.o.B and the two work together on pretty much all those crazy hooks Bobby Ray has been singing.  Plus, Seattle folks should know him as one half of the Bona Brothers with Sonny Bonoho.   Download the tape and peep his appearance on Sound Session with B.o.B from a while back…

Fresh off releasing the dope video for “I’ll Be In The Sky” (currently my jam), Bobby Ray is back with some more visuals for “Lonely People.”  All my fellow antisocial folks out there understand how this jawn sums up why I always turn down those offers to hit the clubs.  No thanks, I’m goooood.

Shout to Bob, Tre, Rich, & TJ…y’all are killing it right now.  2009 is going to be huge.

While chilling at the Inverse show last night, a few of the homies reminded me that I haven’t been posting much on TAOD.  My bad y’all, but my time is stretched so tight that it’s tough to handle all the biz and also [Unk] blog it out [/Unk] consistently.  Also, to be blunt, there wasn’t a whole lot of stuff that I saw this past week that seemed dope enough to post.

However, this new video from B.o.B. was one notable exception.  “I’ll Be In The Sky” is one of my favorite joints of the past year or so and I really hope programmers realize how catchy the hook is.  I would love to see a joint like this catch on, because if you pay attention to the verses, Bobby Ray is actually speaking on some real ish.  Look out for cameos from Playboy Tre and B. Rich, and then be sure to peep the interview I did with all three from a little while back.

Be sure to tune in to Sound Session tonight.  I’ll have a whole bunch of new music plus the Inverse homies will be live in studio…

As much as I love all my favorite classic artists, there’s really nothing better than seeing the next generation come up and begin to establish themselves.  I remember when I first heard of B.o.B., I was impressed, but not blown away.  Fast forward to almost 2 years later and now I’m definitely a huge fan of Mr. Bobby Ray.  He killed every verse and hook in 2008 and ’09 will officially be his break out year.

Not only is he insanely talented, but he’s also a real cool dude.  You all saw a glimpse of that in the “Autotune” video, but I got to see it firsthand when B.o.B., Playboy Tre, and their manager B. Rich came through Sound Session to chop it up a while back.  We talked all about their backgrounds, B.o.B.’s upcoming debut album, the lead single (“I’ll Be In The Sky”), their ability to write infectious hooks, why their music has to be genuine, why the industry needs a reality check, and much more.  You can check out the full interview below:

Bobby Ray just ethered half the industry with this one, Wayne especially.  I’m sure he’ll have to be PC and downplay any controversy as just jokes, but remember: [Ms. Fischer] behind every joke is a little bit of truth [3rd grade teacher].  Glad someone dope in the industry isn’t afraid to say it…
