Russ – Yellow (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on October 4th, 2014 by Hyphen

The homey Russ has quickly become one of my favorite artists out right now. Dope beats, catchy melodies, and some of the most heartfelt, genuine lyrics in the entire game. What more do you need?

“Yellow” is extra special for me since Russ humbled me with the shout out in the second verse.  Definitely got you homey!

Spree Wilson links up with production team The Flush to recreate that classic 90’s ATL bass sound. Shout to my guy Sean Falyon with the classic faces throughout. Dope record and video.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I must start YouTube-ing some classics

Some fun visuals from a drunken Atlanta night with Thurz, Ro Blvd, and Tomas Whitmore off Ro’s upcoming Heart Pounding Panic album dropping first quarter 2012.  The synths on this track are Jon Brion on Late Registration status type ill.

Playboy Tre ft. Lil Jon – Ready Go (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on January 8th, 2011 by Hyphen

New visuals from Playboy Tre for all my alcoholics.  Honestly, I’ve never seen the appeal (to liquor…not Tre, he’s the homey!).  But yeah, what is it about reality that drives people to alter it so often?  Alcohol doesn’t taste good, it’s expensive, addicting, and unhealthy…but yet virtually everyone I know partakes daily.  I’m good though…and wouldn’t you know it…I can still enjoy music the same.  Shocking!

Sean Falyon ft. Playboy Tre and Scar – Wonderful Life (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on May 9th, 2010 by Hyphen

Gotta run to the station for this week’s Sound Session, but I realized that I never posted up the homey Sean’s new video for “Wonderful Life” with Playboy Tre and Scar.  Shout to Tre as well, who was in town on Friday for the B.o.B/Lupe tour.  Good times…

Bobby Ray flips the classic Tribe track for his edition of the Reebok Classic series and absolutely murders the hook.  Super catchy.  Shout to the Cornerstone folks, B Rich, Tre, and TJ…dope job fellas.

B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray & Who The F#*k is B.o.B

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on June 24th, 2009 by Hyphen

I’ve been waiting for this mixtape for a minute, and not only did it drop, but TJ, B Rich, Bobby Ray, Tre, and the crew released it in the always clutch “No DJ” format.  It pains me as a DJ to say this, but 99% of time when a DJ is involved with a project with new material these days, it’s a detriment.  If you really want a DJ on your tape, just have him (or her…hi ladies) mix it cohesively and don’t let them get on the mic.  You can download my old tape with Amen if you’re curious to see how a DJ can actually help the project.  Shocking, I know.

Anyway, enough ranting.  Peep B.o.B’s new tape where he continues to bend genres and explore his Bobby Ray side.  This dude might be the most musically gifted of all the ‘new’ MC’s and he’s certainly one of my favorite artists right now.

Download here.

As a bonus, they also re-released B.o.B’s tape from last year without the DJ’s.  Grab that as well if you’ve been sleeping!

Focus on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on April 15th, 2009 by Hyphen

Hands down, my favorite part of hosting a radio show for the last decade (wow…i’m old) is helping shine light on folks who aren’t getting the respect they deserve.  Now, those within the industry obviously know how talented Focus is, but the general public is still a bit behind.  Recently, they’ve started to learn as he’s unleashed his “homage” series of songs dedicated towards some of his biggest inspirations (DJ Premier, J Dilla, and Pete Rock so far).

We had the chance to catch up with Focus on Sound Session and talk all about how that series came together and who will be next up to receive a homage production.  We also talked about his background (his dad was the bass player in Chic…what!?!), what it’s like working with Dre on Detox, his creative process, the development of his artist, Kida, why there are more good beats than good rappers, and much more.  You can even hear Kida’s new track with Focus, “Must Be Nice,” included in the interview.  Peep it:

Be on the lookout for the next homage to drop real soon and please stop sleeping on this dude.  He flips every style better than most producers flip their specialties and he’s also taking music in his own direction at the same time.  Get familiar now or play catch up later.
