Sound Session #376 (8-26-12)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on August 28th, 2012 by Hyphen

With college and pro football about to kick off, things are getting pretty busy at the day job, so I’ll keep this quick.  I got that work.  Literally.

New music on this week’s SNSS from artists like Brother Ali, Lupe Fiasco, J. Bizness, The Black Opera, Rochelle Jordan, Beanie Sigel, State Property, GLC, Nitty Scott, MC, Roc Marciano, Torae, Khrysis, Method Man, Slaughterhouse, and more.

Plus, we were joined in studio by the filmmakers behind Husky Loyal, which is a great new documentary chronicling the final football game in the University of Washington’s Husky Stadium (before the massive renovation) and in a larger sense, what it means to be part of the Husky community.  Whether you’re directly affiliated with the University or not, and even if you aren’t a sports fan, everyone living in Seattle is greatly influenced by UW.  Check out the trailer here and then peep the soundtrack featuring Seattle producers Blue Sky Black Death, Justo (The Physics), Keyboard Kid, P-Smoov, Ryan Lewis, and OC Notes for a free download right here.

Enjoy the show!

Sound Session #374 (8-12-12)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on August 14th, 2012 by Hyphen

Along with the dope new music from the likes of Scarface, Dion Primo, Andre 3000, Gensu Dean, Olivier Daysoul, Hit-Boy, Kid Cudi, Jared Evan, and more, we had a few guests drop by the SNSS studio this week for some important announcements:

  • Many thanks to the Physics for coming by to play a few songs off their upcoming album, Tomorrow People, which is another classic from the crew.  Without exaggeration, these guys make my favorite music from the Northwest and have been doing it consistently for years now.  I can’t recommend checking out their music enough (do so here) and if you’re in Seattle, be sure to come out to Neumos on August 25th for the release party.
  • Thanks as well for The Good Sin dropping by to talk about his upcoming video shoot for one of the standout records from his last album, The Story of Love x Hate.  He’ll be filming visuals for “Gimme Your Love” this Saturday from 12pm – 6pm at Garfield High School and everyone in the city is invited because the shoot doubles as an end of summer BBQ and Stop The Violence party.  We’ve had far too much senseless violence recently in the town and we should all go show our support at the park on Saturday.  You can enjoy the weather, hang out with the homies, play some dominoes/football/basketball, and spread positivity at the same time.  Be there.
  • Shout to DJ Same, Key Nyata, Ant Beezy, and A-Rawlo for dropping by and speaking on their New School Noise event as well.  It’s going down next Sunday at Neumos and if you’re not rocking out to SNSS, you should be there.  More info here.

And after all that, enjoy the music!

Meek Mill on Sound Session

Posted in Interviews, Sound Session on July 31st, 2012 by Hyphen

I had the chance to chop it up with Meek Mill backstage after his recent performance at Showbox Market and here’s the video we put together.  Meek discussed how he takes the energy from his studio records to the stage, the inspiration behind his hit single “House Party,” his “Dreamchasers 2” mixtape breaking download records, his official upcoming major label debut album, his favorite Philadelphia MC’s, and more.

Big shout to Meek, his MMG family, WMG, Detooz Films, and Le Fresh Perspective for helping coordinate.

Kendrick Lamar on Sound Session

Posted in Interviews, Sound Session on July 28th, 2012 by Hyphen

Apologies for the delay, but here’s our backstage interview with Kendrick Lamar from KUBE 93’s Summer Jam a few weeks ago. Kendrick spoke on balancing his journey to stardom with his focus on the music, his Top Dawg Entertainment family behind the scenes, tour life, “The Recipe” and finding the right single, and his upcoming album. When “Cut You Off” came up in discussion, I had to ask him about his motivations behind that one too since it’s one of my favorite records of the last 5 years or so. All around, a very cool dude and I know we’re all rooting for him to breakthrough and have mainstream success when the next album drops.

Posted in Episodes, Interviews, Sound Session on July 24th, 2012 by Hyphen

A few things to note for this week’s SNSS:

  • Shout to up and coming artist YP for calling in to the show and speaking on his recent signing to Universal, his music, and all things Chicago.
  • Special thanks to Wyking for dropping by the studio to speak on his #2604Peace campaign and the upcoming Umoja Fest here in Seattle.  If you’d like to get involved, just drop that #2064Peace hashtag on Twitter and get down with the crew.  We’re long overdue to stop, or at least hamper, the violence affecting our community and the entire country.  Stop the madness.
  • More special thanks to Thurz for allowing us to world premiere his new record with Rich Kidd and Rocki Evans, “Keep The Faith.”  Be on the lookout for his upcoming mixtape with Mick Boogie, which will be leading up to his next album, Blood On The Canvas.  A classic in the making, trust me.

The Physics – Tomorrow People (Kickstarter Campaign)

Posted in Artists, Videos on July 15th, 2012 by Hyphen

As I’ve mentioned numerous times on TAOD, Twitter, SNSS, Facebook, various hip-hop panels, and just about any other place someone’s made the mistake of giving me a voice, the Physics are my favorite musicians in the Northwest.  They make the exact kind of hip-hop I love: soulful, genuine, complex, smooth, laid back, dope music.  They’ve put out a few projects over the years (which I highly recommend you cop right here) and now they’re back with their third full length LP, Tomorrow People.

They’re asking for assistance via a Kickstarter Campaign and any support you can provide will be well worth it.  Cop the album, a shirt, a hat, or even just donate a dollar to support the cause.  Anything you can provide is appreciated.  More information in the video above and the copy below:

After making music together for over a decade and a half, we are close to finishing our third full-length album, Tomorrow People. We are excited to release it on August 25. All we need is help from you.

Tomorrow People is pretty much about dope raps, dope beats, and dope hooks. After putting out our last LP, Love is a Business, and touring with the Blue Scholars last fall, we went straight back to the lab to produce a rap record that is more lyrical than our last, featuring some of Seattle’s best like Jake One, Sol, Grynch, Vitamin D, J. Pinder, and more. With this release, we are on the cusp of attaining our goals as musicians, knowing that tomorrow is unknown, but hoping that tomorrow will be amazing.

Those who pledge will have access to a wide range of incentives, including digital and physical copies of the album before the release date, Kickstarter-exclusive shirts and snapback hats, a verse from Thig, a beat from Justo, invites to a private Seattle hip hop BBQ, and more.

All funds raised through this campaign will help fund the mixing, mastering, duplication, and promotion of Tomorrow People. Anything we raise above our goal will go straight into a still-unannounced fall tour. The more backers we get, the more cities we can play in.

Please help us spread the word, and help us bring our music straight to you! Your support is GREATLY appreciated.
