Sound Session #365 (6-10-12)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on June 12th, 2012 by Hyphen

Big shout to all the artists, DJ’s, managers, and label reps we caught up with at KUBE’s Summer Jam over the weekend.  Kid Ink, E-40, Tyga, Big Sean, B.o.B, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, and Rick Ross all performed in front of 18k fans at the Gorge.  Great show all around!  Check the recap here.

In other news, this archive for SNSS episode #365 means you can now listen to a show a day for an entire year without repeating a single one.  A full year of SNSS!  What else could you ask for?

Well, I suppose could ask for Maybach Music Group’s Stalley to drop by our show this week to talk about his latest mixtape, MMG’s Self Made, Vol. 2 compilation, and his upcoming album (video of the interview coming soon).  You could also ask for one of Seattle’s dopest MC’s (and possibly the next to follow in Macklemore’s footsteps on the national scene), Sol, to come through as well and talk about his amazing globetrotting plans for the next year and his “farewell” show this Saturday at the Showbox Market (with The Physics and XV).  And in case you wanted to be greedy, you could also ask that Brothers From Another drop by the studio to talk about their new Taco Tuesday EP and debut an instant Seattle summer time classic, “Molly Moon” with Prometheus Brown & Thig Natural.

And since I’m in a giving mood, here you go:

Kid Ink – Time Of Your Life (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on June 6th, 2012 by Hyphen

I’m a little late on the Kid Ink bandwagon, but I’m digging his newest single/video for “Time Of Your Life” (Jennifer Martinez isn’t hurting…at…ALL).  I’d love for this to take off at radio and with a recent remix adding Chris Brown and Tyga, his chances are pretty good. Kinda reminds me of some of Drizzy’s melodies during the hook. Not made one bit and looking forward to seeing him open our Summer Jam this weekend at the Gorge.

Get tickets here if you don’t have ’em already

The Fresh from Shocking Goat

Posted in Goods, Videos on August 11th, 2011 by Hyphen

My good friend from back in the day, Dhru, runs a company called Shocking Goat and they make a really dope series of watches.  All cards on the table, I don’t even rock watches, but every time I’ve showed friends or artists “The Fresh,” they love it.  K.R.I.T. even rocked one at our Summer Jam:

Sound Session #320 (7-17-11)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on July 18th, 2011 by Hyphen

While J. Moore repped Seattle to the fullest with Shabazz Palaces at the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago, I held down the SNSS fort with the intern, Young Nick (aka Beeba) back here in the 6.  Another week, another fun show full of great music.  This time, we highlighted work from folks like Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Don Trip, Purple HeArts, The Black Opera, Nikki Jean, The Weeknd, Tall Black Guy, and more.  Of course we also played the underground hero, Big K.R.I.T., who I got the honor of choppin’ it up with at our Summer Jam on Saturday.  Peace to his crew (Dutch, Wally, & Sant) and shout to the other homies we ran into, B.o.B, Playboy Tre, B. Rich, and TJ!

All that said, I think another artist we played, TiRon, summed it up the nicest at the end of his verse on the show:

“thinkin’ too much…enjoy the moment.”

Show #320 (7-17-11)

Big K.R.I.T. ft. Ludacris and Bun B – Country Sh*t (Remix)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on June 11th, 2011 by Hyphen

There are few things more rewarding for those of us who really live and breathe this music and culture than seeing talented artists, who are also good people with good teams, break through and get the success they deserve. I couldn’t be happier to see someone like Big K.R.I.T. get shine on a major label and have a hit record on his hands with the “Country Sh*t” remix. Kudos to his whole team and to Def Jam for getting this one right.

Seattle folks: come see K.R.I.T. at our Summer Jam on July 16th at the White River Amphitheater!

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Sound Session, Videos on August 28th, 2010 by Hyphen

Much like that De La Soul footage I posted recently, I’ve been meaning to get some of this footage out for months.  Here’s a quick montage of Drake’s performance at our Summer Jam from June.  If you missed out, he’ll be back in Seattle next Monday with J. Cole and Mary J. Blige for Bumbershoot.  Holler @ a Hyphey when you see me there.

Shout to mind of i on the editing.

Drake talks with DJ Semtex

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Other Peoples' Interviews on June 19th, 2010 by Hyphen

If you’re like me, you’ve been listening to Drake’s Thank Me Later album quite heavily the past few weeks, so you’ll probably also enjoy this interview with Semtex.  While they don’t break down every song on the album (I would have been particularly interested to hear the story behind “Karaoke”), there’s a lot of good info in here.  I did laugh at the “sounds like your parents played a big role in your life” question though.  Generally speaking, that’s pretty much what they tend to do.

You can also check out footage of Drake murdering our Summer Jam last night over on the KUBE site.  It was impressive to watch, thinking back to when we played him over 3 years ago on Sound Session.  I never would have anticipated his success to be this great, but it’s really ill to have the hottest rapper of the moment actually be dope.  Novel concept, I know.
