Elzhi talks about some of his classics

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on September 4th, 2008 by Hyphen

I always love hearing behind the scenes stories about songs, especially when they involve my favorite living MC (RIP Big L), Elzhi. MichiganHipHop.com linked up with El and had him recount some of his classic material, including “Come and Get It,” “Reunion,” “Boomerang Slang,” “Scattered Pictures,” “Hiding Place,” “Motown 25,” “Guessing Game,” “Love It Here,” and “Colors.”

If you haven’t already, cop The Preface!  Seattle people: remember that El and Black Milk will be coming to town next week for the Redbull Big Tune.  I’ll post up the schedule of events in a few days for y’all…

Ill Interesting, Intelligent Invincible Internet Interview

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews on August 29th, 2008 by Hyphen

Invincible

In depth too, then my alliteration ran out.  Peep this great interview with one of the dopest female MC’s in the game, Invincible, over at Sweeny Kovar’s Classic Drug References right here.  If you’re unaware, her new album Shapeshifters is in stores now.  Cop it and go make friends with her too.

Bun B at the Democratic National Convention

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews, Politics on August 28th, 2008 by Hyphen

(I know what you’re sayin’)

AllHipHop caught up with Bun at the Convention to get his take on hip-hop’s role in the political process.  That’s interesting that he’s planning on going to the Republican National Convention next week in Minnesota too.  I understand where he’s coming from, but you couldn’t pay me to be surrounded by that much ignorance.  As Bill said last night, “thanks, but no thanks.”

To hear more of Bun talking politics, peep the interview I did with him for Sound Session back in April right here.  Video swiped from Eskay.

Don Cerino on Loud Favorites

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on August 27th, 2008 by Hyphen

Hahahah. My man Don Cerino recently got featured on Loud Favorites and decided to spit some verses for random people in NYC (the Meatpacking District to be exact…definitely ‘pause‘-worthy). Not only is Don one of my favorite MC’s, but he’s hilarious too. Hit the jump to hear him talk about his background and upcoming projects. Sound Session listeners will remember hearing a joint off that Incise project a few weeks back. Fire.

Black Milk on Hip-Hop Official

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on August 27th, 2008 by Hyphen

These Hip-Hop Official dudes have good taste.  They keep making great selections for their “artist of the week” spotlight and here’s their newest pick, the one and only Black Milk.  Milk speaks on the Detroit sound and how his music fits into that vibe.  Seattle people: remember that he’ll be coming to Neumos on Sept. 12th with Elzhi at the Red Bull Big Tune Beat Battle…

Rolling Stone retrospective on Lauryn’s Miseducation

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews on August 26th, 2008 by Hyphen

Miseducation

Oh sorry, not Lauryn…Ms. Hill.  *shakes head*.  Since it’s the 10 year anniversary of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill dropping, Rolling Stone spoke to many of the people involved in making the record, including John Legend, D’Angelo, Pras, her husband Rohan Marley, and Hill herself.  If you’re as big a fan of this album as I am (top 5 dead or alive), you’ll enjoy a lot of the behind the scenes stories.  You’ll also be saddened by the outcome.  I really hope we get a legit sophomore record from Lauryn, but that still seems unlikely.  Having interviewed Clef a few times in the last year, that Fugee record doesn’t seem plausible either.  It all depends on L-Boogie and she’s just not at the right place to do this again.

Check out the article here…highly recommended.  Thanks to Eskay for the heads up.

Murs at the Democratic Convention (big ups to Jake One!)

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews on August 26th, 2008 by Hyphen

All Hip-Hop caught up with Murs at the Democratic National Convention for a quick interview.  Aside from talking a little politics and imploring y’all to vote, he answers one of the weirdest questions I’ve ever heard by bigging up Seattle’s own Jake One.  Murs over “Rock KoKaine Flow”?  I’d love to hear it.  Better yet, I’d love to see Murs and Jake link up for a track or two…

TiRon on VIMBY

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on August 22nd, 2008 by Hyphen
VIMBY – Tiron

Another one of the talented artists carrying the torch for the new west is L.A.’s TiRon.  You’ve probably heard of him through his collaborations with Pacific Division or Tunji (of Inverse), but if not, time for you to wake up.  This VIMBY clip can serve as a decent introduction, though it’s more comedy than highlighting his music.  To cover that, make sure you download his Handshakes & Pounds mixtape right here.

Shout to Greg The Dude on the production!

Kardi talks Bolt…oh, and music

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews on August 22nd, 2008 by Hyphen

Kardinal Offishall sits down with Angie Martinez, DJ Enuff, and Cipha Sounds at Hot 97 in New York.  The interview happened right after Usain Bolt’s domination, and since Kardi has Jamaican roots, you know he was proud.  They also talk a little about his upcoming Not 4 Sale album and his trademark yell.  After the jump, peep Kardi talk about his favorite MC of all time.
