The Vimby x UpOnThingz mixtape, The New Classics, dropped last week as a streamable project on iMeem, but it’s 2009…and that just doesn’t quite cut it these days. GregTheDude gave me a sneak peak of this last night…pause…but now it’s officially ready for the world to see. Greg + Tunji + Cook = Claremont Colleges talent at its finest, but y’all don’t know about that.
What you do know, however, is that it’s becoming quite evident that Tunj is a beast. Here he runs down the artists appearing on the upcoming VIMBY mixtape in freestyle form. If you’re up on your 5-C’s trivia, this will remind you of his classic Pomona-Pitzer bball intro. Ah, the good ol’ days.

Y-O, Thurz, and Cook Classics appear to be cooking up a little something sampling one of the greatest songs of all time, Gregory Isaacs’ “Night Nurse,” for the upcoming VIMBY mixtape. I remember Thurz singing this randomly last time U-N-I was up here and I commented on how much I love that track. I had no idea they were working on a remake of sorts. I can’t wait to hear the final version.
And in case you’re sleeping, vibe out to the original. Flawless…
Another one of the talented artists carrying the torch for the new west is L.A.’s TiRon. You’ve probably heard of him through his collaborations with Pacific Division or Tunji (of Inverse), but if not, time for you to wake up. This VIMBY clip can serve as a decent introduction, though it’s more comedy than highlighting his music. To cover that, make sure you download his Handshakes & Pounds mixtape right here.

Tunji sent over this dope video of Talib (with Hi-Tek!), Buck, and Pete performing at the American Museum of Natural History a few weeks back. Pete Rosenberg makes a good point – back in the day, who would have thought you’d see hip-hop take over a place like that? Very ill.

He takes you through Chicago, talking about his style, his inspirations, and his upcoming album, all the while displaying some of his personal growth as an artist.
