1-877-DUNKD-ON, Pt. 2

Posted in Sports, Videos on July 18th, 2008 by Hyphen

Second edition of Nike’s new Hyperdunk Recovery Center ads.  First it was Devante, now it’s Terry.  If this is going to be a running series, I might as well start featuring some of my favorite posters then:

J-Hen (of Tha Bizness) makes a beat on his iPhone

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on July 18th, 2008 by Hyphen

As we continue to prove, Seattle’s making huge moves in the music game.  Helping lead the pack are J-Hen and Dow Jones, collectively known as Tha Bizness.  When they’re not producing tracks for artists like 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, T.I., R. Kelly, and more, they’re coming up with crazy stuff like the above video.  J-Hen shows you how to cook up a beat on your new iPhone, assuming you’ve copped one.  Looks dope, but I’m kind of addicted to my Blackberry.  Until my man Budo tells me to switch, I’m waiting for the Bold.

Speaking of Hen, check out last week‘s Sound Session to hear his childhood friends, The Parker Brothaz, talk about his production success.  He produced the Killer Mike joint, “Pressure,” that’s killing the blogs these days.  206/253/360/425 up!

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on July 17th, 2008 by Hyphen

What’s up with dropping the parts separately?  Holler @ organization.  Anyway, shout to Dave Smith from across the pond for pointing out some doper British DJ’s we should check for.  I’m on it.  Part 3 of the Com interview after the jump.

EPMD on the basketball court from waaay back

Posted in Sports, Videos on July 16th, 2008 by Hyphen

Another ill throwback video from The Meaning of Dope, this one featuring Erick & Parish showing off a few of their trademarked moves on the court.  I always think it’s hilarious how so many hip-hop related people, who clearly are horrible players, think they can ball.  Sure, there are a handful of MC’s who can (or could) play (Game, Mase, Cam, Lil’ Romeo, even Will Smith was all-city apparently), but most rappers wanted to be athletes growing up.  It’s the same thing in reverse too; athletes want to be entertainers.  By no means am I a baller, but I played small college and can hold my own.  When I jokingly talk smack with artists and then get on the court only to see something like the above?  Awww man.  I just feel bad.

The mystery has been solved

Posted in Artists, Videos on July 16th, 2008 by Hyphen

If you listened to my interview with John Legend last week, you heard us reminiscing on the College Dropout days when he toured with Kanye.  This was way before A-Trak DJ’d Kanye’s sets, so his road manager, Don C, would handle that…not always so smoothly.  John couldn’t remember the name they used to call Don in those days, but it looks like Consequence just brought it out of retirement in this clip documenting the making of N.E.R.D.’s “Everyone Nose (Remix)” video.

Sidenote: I’m a little disappointed that this video looks like it’ll be standard green screen fare.  Hopefully they have some dope aftereffects, otherwise I’m worried.

Jay Smooth on The Sound of Young America

Posted in Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on July 15th, 2008 by Hyphen

Jay Smooth stopped by Jesse Thorn’s The Sound of Young America recently, and the interview turned out dope.  They discussed Jay’s background and how hip-hop is evolving through new media provided by the internet.  I really respect where Jay’s coming from and he’s undoubtedly one of my favorite “hip-hop journalists.”

Check out more on his blog, and a previous interview of Jesse’s with Blu right here.

Chase Chad & Kenna in VA

Posted in Artists, Videos on July 15th, 2008 by Hyphen

This seems like an older clip, but I’ve never seen it before and Chad just posted it up on his blog.  Either way, it’s dope.  Chad and Kenna visit their old high school and explain what it was like growing up in Virgina Beach.

Foundation Crossfit on Sound Session

Posted in Sound Session, Sports, Videos on July 15th, 2008 by Hyphen

My good friends Dru and John from Foundation Crossfit stopped by Sound Session on Sunday to talk a little bit about working out. They explained exactly what crossfit is, what they do at their gym in North Seattle, how you can get down with some free workouts, and more. Make sure you come to the gym for the free “Rainstorm” workouts every weekend. It’s the best workout in Seattle, hands down. Whether you’re in shape or not, you can always get healthier! I’m there every week, and the people are super cool & friendly, so come check it out. Aight?

For more information, peep their website – http://www.foundationcrossfit.com

DISCLAIMER: That Bud Light didn’t belong to the workout warriors. That was Stretch’s from The Parker Brothaz, one of the best hip-hop groups in the NW, who were also on the show. You can hear more of them (and understand why we were joking about Yung Joc) by downloading the full show.

Christian Bale on the Today Show

Posted in Movies, Videos on July 15th, 2008 by Hyphen

(video swiped from Real Talk NY)

As I alluded to earlier, I got a chance to watch the new Batman flick, The Dark Knight, today, and basically, I’m still in awe.  I generally recommend seeing movies completely unaware of anything but the most basic plot details, so I’m not going to spoil it for you.  Plus, if I wrote a full review, I’d have nightmare flashbacks about my media studies days at the 5-C‘s.  *shudder*

In short, the movie is phenomenal.  Everything about it – from the story, to the acting, to the effects, to the overall tone – is spot on.  If you enjoyed Batman Begins (which you better have), you’ll like this one even more.  Christopher Nolan is clearly one of the most talented directors out there (remember Memento and The Prestige?), and Christian Bale‘s interpretation of Bruce Wayne is flawless.  It definitely draws from his role as Patrick Bateman, which, in my mind, never gets old.  Everyone else did an incredible job as well, but you expect that from Michael Caine, Aaron Eckhart, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman.  The highlight, and ultimately saddest part, of the movie is Heath Ledger giving a masterful performance as the Joker.  There are already rumors about an Oscar nomination and I hope he wins it posthumously.  It’s really sad that we won’t see his acting prowess again.

Pay your respects to him by checking out the movie ASAP, plus you’ll be thoroughly entertained at the same time.  Oh, and you must see this on an IMAX screen.  Seriously.

Thaaaaaat’s a touchy subject

Posted in Politics, Videos on July 11th, 2008 by Hyphen

(LOL @ the look at 0:49)

It’s not even really funny because of the logical age/Viagra connection, but instead, it’s hilarious to watch “the Straight Talk Express” constantly veer off the tracks.  It’s been an awful week for McCain, and this little incident aboard his bus didn’t help matters.  If heath insurance companies are covering Viagra, it’s most certainly wrong that they won’t cover birth control.  Too bad he voted against that.  Of all the issues to get stumped on, you could not have picked a more awkward topic for McLame.
