Sound Session #501 (1/18/15)

SNSS

Apologies for the delay in this week’s SNSS archive but hey, that’s what happens when you’ve traveled half way around the world.  So far, life in London is not too dissimilar to life at home, thanks mostly to the amazing technology we have at our fingertips.  Being able to log on to social media to see what everyone back home is talking about and to interact with them is the best cure for any homesickness, and honestly, most of the interaction I have with folks back home was digital to begin with.  As long as my pixels can still talk to your pixels, that’s 2015 and I’m good…though it wouldn’t hurt to be back in the 6 for all this Seahawks madness…

That said, I’ve spent the last week adapting to the time schedule (the absolute worst for a west coast sports fan) and working, so I’m about to head out and explore this city a bit today.  Before then, enjoy this week’s SNSS featuring new tracks from artists like Action Bronson, Fabolous, Wale, OnCue, Black Moon, Diamond District, Fice, Von Pea, Lupe Fiasco, Joey Badass, Jean Deaux, Thelonius Martin, Theophilus London, Little Simz, one of my favorite UK discoveries, Jay Prince, and more.  And don’t forget to peep our 500th show from the week prior if you want to celebrate almost 10 years of the program!

Sound Session #359 (4-29-12)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on May 1st, 2012 by Hyphen

After touring with THEESatisfaction across Europe for the last 3 weeks, J. Moore made his triumphant return on this week’s SNSS.  He also brought with him one of our favorite producers and all around cool dude, 14KT.  Those of you in the know will remember KT from his Athletic Mic League days (the same crew that spawned Buff1 and Mayer Hawthorne), but if you can’t recall those days, perhaps you would recognize him as the reigning Red Bull Big Tune beat battle champion.  If you aren’t familiar, please drop what you’re doing and check out his beats, starting with his newest project, A Friendly Game Of KT.  Without exaggeration, one of the illest producers in the game…hands down.

While KT co-hosted the show with us, we also aired our recent interview with Slaughterhouse…errr, 3/4th’s of the crew at least.  Joey was on the injured list with a tooth issue (hey…tour life is no joke), but Crooked I, Royce Da 5’9″, and Joell Ortiz came through to talk about their upcoming Welcome To Our House album, touring, their webisode series, and more.  I’m hoping to post up the video of the interview shortly, but for now, enjoy the audio…and the rest of the show!

Show #359 (4-29-12)
**Co-hosted by 14KT**

  8. Nas – “Daughters”

Slaughterhouse – Hammer Dance (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on April 29th, 2012 by Hyphen

Here’s the video Joe, Royce, Crook, and Joell shot for “Hammer Dance” while down in Austin for SXSW.  The Shady showcase where 50 did all of Get Rich Or Die Trying was probably the best show I caught while down there (shout to K.R.I.T., who killed that one by the way), so I’m happy to see some footage from Slaughter’s performance included here.

We’ll be airing my interview with these fellas on tonight’s Sound Session, tune in!

Elzhi – Memory Lane (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on December 26th, 2011 by Hyphen

Elzhi’s manager, Jae Barber, teams up with Gerard Victor to create some nice visuals for El’s remake of Nas’ classic (and my favorite song off Illmatic).  You’ll recognize faces like Eminem, Royce Da 5’9″, J Dilla, Proof, T3, Baatin, and others in the footage of Detroit’s legendary Hip-Hop Shop, famously highlighted in 8 Mile.

Eminem, Slaughterhouse, & Yelawolf – BET Cypher (video)

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on October 15th, 2011 by Hyphen

Like any sane individual, I didn’t watch the BET Awards and I knew that anything worth seeing would pop up online later.  Sure enough, the video that had Twitter going crazy and everyone professing their love for Eminem is here in all its explicit glory.

Em’s verse is bananas and it’s funny to hear him rhyme over East Flatbush Project’s “Tried By 12” beat almost 15 years after he was killing the Rap Olympics over similar records, but like any moment that gets SO much hype…I just instinctively have a little bit of a “meh” reaction.  Don’t get me wrong, every rapper here is dope and spits crazy, but there’s just so many bars upon bars upon bars upon bars for me.  I would have spazzed about this in 2000, but now, it’s cool…plus, it’s a great look for lyrics to actually be highlighted on a network like BET.

Well done 2.0 Boys.

Sound Session #315 (6-12-11)

Posted in Episodes, Interviews, Sound Session on June 13th, 2011 by Hyphen

I initially intended to share some extended thoughts on the NBA season wrapping up last night, but then I went and forgot to eat food today.  Uh, whoops.  So I’ll make this quick cause my kitchen is callin’ me and for the most part, Bill Simmons expertly summed up many of my takeaways on the game, series, and Lebron’s incredible ability to avoid shooting alienate the entire viewing public in this piece.

Anyway, congrats to the Mavs and the big homey, Seattle’s own (and one of my Arizona Wildcats too) Jason Terry!  It was a very entertaining series, but after hockey’s game 7 and the NBA Draft pass, we’ll be down to just baseball and the WNBA for the summer.  Well, baseball, the WNBA, and the Women’s World Cup.  You think I’m joking, but I’m with it.  Word to Abby Wambach.

Musically, another great week, but y’all already know how we do.  Shout to good friend of SNSS, Royce Da 5’9″ for calling in to discuss his new Bad Meets Evil project with Eminem.  In stores today!

Royce Da 5’9″ on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on November 26th, 2009 by Hyphen

You might recall that Slaughterhouse recently dropped by the Sound Session studio, but soon after, Royce Da 5’9″ returned for another show in Seattle and came through solo.  We covered a ton of topics in the 3 part conversation so I decided to put the full video online for y’all to enjoy.

Shout to Royce, easily one of the most down to earth and talented artists that we’ve had on the show.  When I was a high school kid losing my mind to all his verses in the late 90’s, I never would have thought I’d have the opportunity to kick it with him a few times.  Craziness.  Go cop Street Hop immediately and peep below for the interview.

Part 1:

(watch on HyphenTV)

  • Reception of the Slaughterhouse project
  • Familial relationship of the group
  • Future of Slaughterhouse
  • Earliest memories of Eminem

Part 2:

(watch on HyphenTV)

  • Working with Eminem as part of Bad Meets Evil
  • Learning recording techniques from Em
  • His favorite MC’s
  • Detroit’s knack for producing dope rappers
  • His thoughts on J. Cole

Part 3:

(watch on HyphenTV)

  • The Charles Hamilton/J Dilla fiasco
  • His current relationship with Dr. Dre
  • His new Street Hop album
  • What he has left to prove in the game
  • Future Bar Exam mixtapes

If you would prefer to just listen to the discussion and toss it on your mp3 player, here’s the audio of the full interview:

Slaughterhouse – Microphone (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on November 21st, 2009 by Hyphen

Visuals for the latest track from the Slaughterhouse album.  If you missed our SNSS interview with 3/4 of the group, peep it here.

I have another dope interview with Royce on deck, so look out for that in the coming week.  If you’ll excuse me though, it’s time to watch Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and be thoroughly disappointed.  Michael Bay…slaughtered…my childhood.

Sound Session #229 (10-18-09)

Posted in Artists, Episodes, Sound Session on October 19th, 2009 by Hyphen

Weekends like these don’t come along too often.

This past Saturday, Jay-Z performed in Seattle for the first time in 10 years (apparently Bill Gates needs to remind Hov about our lovely city) and pretty much shut down the city.  Aside from a few Blueprint 3 songs that really have no business being performed at a Jay-Z show, the concert was epic from start to finish.  Call me old fashioned, but I’d like to see at least one song from Reasonable Doubt (“Dead Presidents”!?!?!) or In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 (“A Million and One Questions”!?!?!?) rather than “On To The Next One.”  Maybe that’s just me.  *Kanye shrug*

That said, in front of a sold out Key Arena, Jay killed it from beginning to end and the opening lineup of J. Cole, Wale, and N.E.R.D. was excellent.  Big shout to all those artists for coming through the studio before the show.  We’ll have interviews with them coming soon…

Meanwhile, on this week’s SNSS, we played new joints from (who else) Hov, N.E.R.D., J. Cole, Big Boi, Slick Rick, the CunninLynguists, Ghostface Killah, Fashawn, and more.  Local artist Sol joined us in studio and we played a snippet of our interview with Royce Da 5’9″.  Cop Street Hop in stores now!  Last but not least, we world premiered a new track from the one and only YZ featuring Slug and Brother Ali.  If you don’t know, now you know.

Show #229 (10-18-09)

  1. Jay-Z ft. Pharrell – “So Ambitious”
  2. N.E.R.D. ft. Santigold – “Soldier”
  3. Janelle Monae – “Come Alive (The War Of The Roses)”
  4. Lupe Fiasco – “Fire”
  5. Dynas ft. Slick Rick – “Family Jewels”
  6. Keelay & Zaire ft. Tunji, Thurzday, Kam Moye, Ragen Fykes, & the Park – “Addicts For Real (Remix)”
  7. **INTERVIEW WITH SOL, PT. 1**
  8. Sol ft. Grynch – “No Sleep” (Local Music)
  9. **INTERVIEW WITH SOL, PT. 2**
  10. Big Boi ft. Gucci Mane – “Shine Blockas”
  11. J. Cole – “World Is Empty”
  12. **INTERVIEW WITH ROYCE DA 5’9” (SNIPPET)**
  13. Royce Da 5’9” ft. Phonte – “Something 2 Ride 2”
  14. Yoshi ft. Buff1 & Darien Brockington – “Magnetic”
  15. Jay Rush ft. D-Black – “I Ain’t Even Mad (Khrysis Real Sh*t Remix)”
  16. BK-One ft. Murs – “Eighteen To Twenty-One”
  17. YZ ft. Slug & Brother Ali – “Did I Ever Tell You” (WORLD PREMIERE)
  18. CunninLynguists ft. E-40 & Evidence – “Running Wild”
  19. Macklemore ft. Geologic – “Church” (Local Music)
  20. Debaser ft. Phat Kat & Rasco – “Out Front” (Local Music)
  21. Ghostface Killah – “Stay”
  22. Sene – “WonLover”
  23. Fashawn ft. Exile – “Bo Jackson”

Slaughterhouse on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session, Videos on August 25th, 2009 by Hyphen

(watch on HyphenTV)

While in town for our abridged version of Rock The Bells on the 14th, Slaughterhouse came through the Sound Session studio to kick it with J. Moore and myself.  Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, and Royce Da 5’9″ talked all about their Slaughterhouse project, while Crooked I was in another studio recording a verse for a Seattle artist. They also discussed the differences recording solo vs. as a group, if they felt any competition in the booth, who they’d pick in their own super groups, why real lyricists need to be back on the radio, and more.

To listen to the full interview, check the audio below:

Go cop the album and support 4 of the hardest working and dopest MC’s in the game, period.
