Sound Session #201 (4-5-09)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on April 7th, 2009 by Hyphen

Fresh off last week’s 200th edition of SNSS, we’re hitting you over the head with another dope show, this time, packed full of exclusive joints that I believe we world premiered Sunday on KUBE.  In today’s internet age, the traditional idea of ‘exclusives’ has pretty much gone out the window, and regardless, I’ve never even been that big a fan of the whole notion anyway.  Simply because a DJ plays something first, doesn’t make it worthwhile (“NEW SOULJA BOY!!!!”).

Instead, this past week, we ran some great songs that the general public just hasn’t heard yet, but everyone will probably have soon.  Some of them will be included on our upcoming Cornerstone Mixtape (with some other exclusives), but who knows if they’ll leak before that drops in May.  Speaking of which, DJ B-Mello, J. Moore, and I finished up the mixtape last night (shout to Taybot and L for the engineering assistance!) and it sounds fresh.  Looking forward to y’all hearing it, but for now, peep the show and some world premieres from Fashawn (prod. Exile), Roddy Rod ft. Phonte & Carlitta Durand, Asher Roth, and Tanya Morgan ft. Blu.  [Kanye] Good music definitely in the building! [/Yeezy]

Show #201 (4-5-09)

  1. Donnis – “Party Works”
  2. CunninLynguists ft. Khujo Goodie & Killer Mike – “Georgia (Remix)”

  4. Kid Cudi – “Rollin’ Freestyle”
  5. Kid Cudi ft. Kanye West, Common, & A-Trak – “I Poke Her Face”

Sound Session #200 (3-29-09)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on March 31st, 2009 by Hyphen

Yup!  You read that right.

This past week marked the 200th episode of Sunday Night Sound Session.  We’ve been on KUBE for almost 4 years (that anniversary happens the first week of May) and it’s been our pleasure to invade the commercial radio airwaves and help break new and alternative music from around the world.  Unfortunately, shows like ours on large stations are few and far between (shout to all the other folks fighting the good fight), so we’re definitely very appreciative of the outlet our KUBE family has provided.

Equally as important, we’d like to thank everyone who has helped us out in any fashion over the years.  If you ever tuned in, downloaded an interview, submitted a song, checked out the blog, etc., we really appreciate it.  Without an intelligent audience that craves alternative media outlets, the music would fall on deaf ears.  Here’s to 200 more…

Whoooo…I know I’ve already mentioned it a ton on the Twitter and on the blog, but SXSW was incredible last week.  Basically, it was a high school field trip with all your closest hip-hop buddies.  Damn near everyone in the industry (well, at least indie hip-hop) mobbed down to Austin to enjoy 80 degree weather, free food & drinks, and more live music than you can possibly imagine.  While the performances were insane, the best part was just meeting with so many like minded folks.  Hip-hop ain’t dead in the least.  You just might think so if you aren’t looking in the right direction.

Sound Session #198 (3-15-09)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on March 16th, 2009 by Hyphen

Look at me staying up late on a Sunday night to archive the show right away, fresh off the presses for y’all.  Well, to be honest, I’m actually posting it up with the quickness because I’m trying to prep for this week as best I can.  It’s set to be a crazy one as I’ll be headed down to SXSW in Austin on Wednesday and coming back to Seattle right before the next SNSS, so free time will be at a minimum.  In fact, J. Moore will also be down there with a lot of the 206 family, so if you’re there too, give us a shout.  SNSS x SXSW, you know what it is.

Shout to Keelay (of Keelay & Zaire) and Nightclubber Lang for coming through last night’s show as well.  If you haven’t copped Kee & Zee’s Ridin’ High album, you’re sleeping on one of the best releases of the year.  Look out for some video footage of the interview coming soon as well.  In the meantime, enjoy the audio:

Sound Session #197 (3-8-09)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on March 10th, 2009 by Hyphen

What up, what up?  I know it’s been a minute since I’ve posted anything up, but your boy has been mad busy.  After heading down to Oregon last weekend for a basketball tournament with my 6th grade select team that I coach, I promptly caught a crazy cold that has me stuck in bed.  I fought it all last week and seemed to be doing pretty well, but when you have a nagging cold and don’t eat or sleep well all week, it usually catches up to you.  Running around from 9am – midnight every day for weeks at a time definitely got to me.  And someone please tell me why it’s still snowing in March in Seattle…wtfffff.

Sound Session #196 (3-1-09)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on March 3rd, 2009 by Hyphen

While I always like the songs we play on SNSS (I’m slightly biased), there are certain weeks where I absolutely love the tracks.  This was one of those weeks.  From Drake to Deep Rooted, Zion I to Nottz, John Legend to Nat King Cole, this was one of my favorite SNSS episodes in a minute.

Plus, we were joined in the studio by a dope up and coming artist from the town, Sol, and played a snippet of an interview we did with TiRon.  Be on the lookout for the full version of that interview, which I’ll be posting up later this week.  In the meantime, enjoy:

Sound Session #194 (2-15-09)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on February 16th, 2009 by Hyphen

Man, how great would it be if every Monday was a holiday?  It’s a lot easier to host a late Sunday night show, sleep in the next day, and then post up the archive when you don’t have to run to work first thing in the morning.  I’m not mad at this at all.

Last night was a pretty fun show, though I was a little bored with nobody else in the studio (if you couldn’t tell by this post).  J will be back from his travels next week, but in the meantime, I played some dope tracks from folks like M.O.P., Cormega, Drake, Kid Cudi, the CunninLynguists, Mos Def, K’Naan, Big Boi, and I might have debuted a new Mayer Hawthorne (DJ Haircut) track too.  Not sure if anyone’s played that one yet, but, obviously, it’s dope.  Peep it all below:

Sound Session #193 (2-8-09)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on February 10th, 2009 by Hyphen

Wow.  It’s 1:30AM (PST) and whether it was Khaled or not, which I’m sure we’ll find out by the morning, I just watched the standoff with LAPD end on the live chopper feed and it was not pretty.  According to Fox in LA, the driver of the Bentley killed himself so RIP to whoever it was.

On that note, I really don’t have anything to say about this week’s SNSS.  You know the drill.  I can’t think of anything to write after watching something like that.
