Sound Session #570 (9/25/16)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on October 10th, 2016 by Hyphen

Greetings from 7,744 miles away from Seattle, live and direct from Sydney, Australia!

If you’ve heard the past few shows, you heard DJ Nphared and I chat about my work trip down under for ESPN, and it’s finally underway.  It’s taken a minute to travel halfway around the world, get settled, and get the archive up for SNSS #570 from a few weeks back, but we’re finally in business.  I’ll be here for 3 months and broadcasting each week from 17 hours in the future.  Monday Afternoon Sound Session doesn’t quite have the same ring, but that’s what it’ll be for me here in Sydney.  Many thanks to those who have helped get us all hooked up to broadcast from the land of kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, and, of course, Margot Robbie.

On this episode, we ran tracks from T.I. & Killer Mike, ODIE, NxWorries, OthaSoul, Mick Jenkins, Rejjie Snow, Tink, Mndsgn, Brent Faiyaz, Isaiah Rashad, Danny Brown, Xavier Omar (fka SPZRKT), and more.  2 Throwbacks for the 20th & 25th anniversary of two classic albums as well.  Lots of good stuff here, enjoy and be on the lookout for our first episode from Sydney to be archived shortly as well!

Sound Session #486 (10-5-14)

Posted in Episodes, Interviews, Sound Session on October 9th, 2014 by Hyphen

On this week’s SNSS episode, we filled the show with a ton of great music from the likes of Joell Ortiz, Joey Bada$$, Fashawn, Dom Kennedy, Childish Gambino, Logic, Diamond D, Nottz, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, Jessie Ware, Tinashe, ODESZA, Gorgon City, Broods, and more.  Plus, Cozz called in, fresh off the heels of his Cozz & Effect album to talk all about the project, his background, his relationship with J. Cole, how he ended up signing with Dreamville, and more.  If you just want to peep that interview, you can check it right here.

On top of all that, we were joined in the second hour of the show by Anna Lunoe, a singer/producer/DJ from Sydney, Australia.  Anna played the Neptune Theater earlier in the evening and then dropped by the studio to co-host with us and talk about her new EP, All Out.  We played a couple tracks off it (the excellent title track and a crazy record with Jesse Boykins III) and then learned a bit about her experiences as an artist coming up in Australia and how she fell in love with music.  It was a really enjoyable conversation (if you want to peep just the parts with Anna, click here) and the whole show had a great vibe.  Hope y’all enjoy it!

Flume ft. Ghostface Killah & Autre Ne Veut – Space Cadet (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on March 22nd, 2014 by Hyphen

Flume is an Australian producer who released a really good project, then remixed it and added all sorts of dope MC’s to the tracks (like Ghostface, Freddie Gibbs, Killer Mike, and more).  Here’s the trippy cartoon video for “Space Cadet.”

Not convinced, peep this record called “Insane” with Moon Holiday:

So dope.

Now I’m definitely taking a vacation…

Jay-Z & Kanye West – Watch The Throne (mini documentary)

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on July 23rd, 2011 by Hyphen

When “Otis” dropped this past week, I couldn’t help but chuckle at all the praise filled tweets and blogs, as if the track’s quality somehow caught folks off guard. It’s Hov and Yeezy! What do you expect?

This mini documentary really just teases us with what it might be like to live the uber-baller, can’t tell me nothin’ kind of life that Jay and Kanye exist in.  When you live in this plane, whatever you want to do, you just will it and it’s done. Want to record a masterpiece with your friends in Hawaii? No problem, MBDTF is your result.  Want to switch locales to Australia, rent castles, hang out with Russell Crowe, and immortalize him in music history?  You got it.

Despite a few folks trying to get their attention, there isn’t any competition in hip-hop for these two.  They live on the throne, we watch it.

Cee & Bekah – The Soul Movement, Vol. 3 (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on December 25th, 2009 by Hyphen

The homies Cee & Bekah traveled all the way from Australia to link up with Mick Boogie & Terry Urban and drop the latest edition of their Soul Movement mixtape series.  This one picks up right where Vol. 2 left off with an ill mix of dope rhymes and ill melodies.  Great beat selection too.  Cop this with the quickness and if you’ve been sleeping, you can actually download all 3 volumes off the Bandcamp link below.

Download here.

GregTheDude and Tunji took OkayplayerTV around Los Angeles to link up with Thes-One and Double K, better known as the People Under The Stairs.  The duo talked about how they originally linked up, their recording history, their new Fun DMC album, and their video for “The Wiz.”  That clip is one of my favorites from this past year, though I never would have guessed that the weather was awful when they shot it in Australia.  It always looked like the perfect summer joint to me:

Sidenote: it’s not smart to watch a video like that on a day when we’re snowed in here in Seattle.  Even if it was freezing down there, it makes me miss summer like craaaazy.
