Frank Ocean – Pyramids (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on September 23rd, 2012 by Hyphen

I don’t know if it’s the video of the year, but it’s certainly my song of the year. I only wish they had visuals for the entire 10 minute piece.

Yuna – Thinkin’ Bout You (video)

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Music Videos, Videos on July 13th, 2012 by Hyphen

While I don’t think anyone is capable of improving on Frank Ocean’s flawless original, I was happy to see Yuna cover “Thinkin’ Bout You.”  She came with a unique twist on it and it turned out dope.  There’s a rumor that a certain Seattle based radio show might be linking up with Yuna in a few days for an interview and exclusive acoustic performance…

Jay-Z & Kanye West ft. Frank Ocean & The-Dream – No Church In The Wild (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on May 31st, 2012 by Hyphen

Jay and Yeezy are so big, they can’t even get booked for their own music videos these days.  At least the fantastic director, Romain Gavras, took a break from making incredible visuals to wack M.I.A. songs to do a clip for a great record.  Dopeness.

That said, his best video is still Justice’s “Stress.”  Insane:

Odd Future – Oldie (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on March 22nd, 2012 by Hyphen

Now this is an OFWGKTA cut I can get with.

At a photo shoot with Terry Richardson, the entire Odd Future crew started rapping along to their song as it played in the background and they ended up filming this impromptu music video.  Yeah, it’s 10 minutes…but that beat is great and each MC does his thing.  Tyler has the charisma of course, and Earl is everyone’s lyrical favorite, but I was pretty impressed by the other members as well.  Besides, you can tell they’re just genuinely having fun, kicking raps…and I love that.

Summer Leather Vest – Unison (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on November 25th, 2011 by Hyphen

I remember watching some of the Joe Budden TV episodes (side note: Joey is one of the most entertaining cats in the industry, hands down) when Drake put out So Far Gone and I always thought it was interesting how open Joe was in praising Drizzy’s work.  Take this one, for example, where Joe spazzes over “A Night Off”…and rightly so, it’s a phenomenal record.  A year or so later, he had the same reaction for Frank Ocean’s “Novacane,” which later led to this (Internet) classic.

Another year later, and it’s not surprising to see Joe release music with that same vibe, though he’s doing it fairly coyly as part of a side project with Emanny, jokingly called Summer Leather Vest (you’ll see the inspiration in the video hahaha).  It’s a shrewd, smart move, because it allows Joe to try something new without fully committing to it.  I’d expect to see some of this sound permeate his upcoming solo releases, but I doubt he’ll bring much of it to the Slaughterhouse project so fans of the rappity rapp rap shouldn’t fear.  I’m glad to see him diversifying his sound though, especially because joking or not, “Unison” came out fresh.

Frank Ocean – Thinking About You (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on September 17th, 2011 by Hyphen

The yin to my last post’s yang, I LOVE this record, but the video is too creepy for me.  I almost feel like if they just put Nabil’s “Swim Good” visuals to this track, it might turn out real dope.  Eh well, I’ll cope.

Bridget Kelly, on the other hand, must feel a little sideways about this song getting visuals after Frank supposedly wrote it for her Roc Nation project…
