Jay Electronica at Bumbershoot (Seattle, WA – 9/5/10)

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on September 26th, 2010 by Hyphen

Almost forgot that I grabbed this footage of Jay Electronica performing “Exhibit A” and “Exhibit C” at Bumbershoot a few weeks back.  I’ve heard people were split on his performance: some thought he got the pit area hype, while others were disappointed by how often his DJ cut out the beat and how many acapella verses he spit.  One thing’s for sure…if there’s any beat you should let play in its entirety, it’s “Exhibit C.”  Hearing that bang through the speakers was definitely a highlight of the festival (as was J. Cole’s performance).

Sound Session #276 (9-12-10)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on September 13th, 2010 by Hyphen

Another insanely busy weekend around the Northwest, and pretty much all over, with the first official week of the NFL season taking the country by storm.  Between the NFL, NCAA football, the FIBA championship, the US Open, EPL, the WNBA Finals (hey, gotta rep the home team…plus I’ve had a crush on Sue Bird since about 2002), and the MTV VMA’s, not only do we have a lot of acronyms, but Saturday & Sunday were jam packed with entertainment.  Rather than rehash it here, you really should be following my Twitter…and of course, J. Moore’s as well.

On the heels of our web chat footage of J. Cole from last week, if you missed his live performance at Bumbershoot, I shot some footage you can check out right here.  When “Grown Simba” drops at 8:47, it’s really too ill, and this performance shows why Cole is gonna be a star in the near future.  It’s well deserved too.

J. Cole at Bumbershoot (Seattle, WA – 9/6/10)

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Sound Session, Videos on September 12th, 2010 by Hyphen

After coming through the Sound Session studios for the web chat with fans that I posted a few days ago, J. Cole took to the main stage at the Bumbershoot Festival to perform alongside Drake and Mary J. Blige.  J. Moore and I hosted the show, so I grabbed some footage from the stage as Cole battled the rain and performed songs like “Blow Up,” “Who Dat,” “Lights Please,” “Grown Simba,” “A Star Is Born,” and more.

I’ll be posting up the interview we did soon as well, but enjoy the live show for now.  You gotta love the girls in the front row going crazy for Cole and also how hard the crowd rocked when “Grown Simba” dropped (at 8:27).  “Bitch, I’m about to blow up!”

Sound Session #275 (9-5-10)

Posted in Episodes, Interviews, Sound Session on September 8th, 2010 by Hyphen

As I mentioned last week, we had some big events here in Seattle over the past few days.  First off, shout to Nottz, DJ Toomp, and all the competitors in the Seattle stop of the Red Bull Big Tune.  Well…all the producers…except one.  If you were there, you already know.  If not, enjoy the awkwardness.  But on the real, congrats to Rising Son and Trox for repping the NW nicely.  See y’all in the finals fellas…

Secondly, many thanks to everyone who came through Seattle’s Bumbershoot Festival over the holiday weekend.  By all accounts, the festival was a smashing success and J. Moore and I enjoyed hosting the main stage on Monday night to wrap up the show.  J. Cole, Drake, and Mary J. Blige combined to close out the weekend and pretty much killed it.  I didn’t hear a single account from someone who didn’t enjoy the concert and from where we watched, it certainly looked like the audience loved it.

Special shout to J. Cole and his crew for coming through KUBE for an interview and hopping in a live web chat with almost a thousand fans.  If you missed it, you can check out the archived video right here.  We’ll air the formal interview shortly…

Lastly, thanks to Thee Satisfaction and Angela Yee (shout to her artist, Jay Electronica too) for dropping by Sound Session live on Sunday night to co-host with us.  If you missed the lovely ladies of Thee Satisfaction performing at the festival, you definitely missed one of the highlights.  And if you aren’t familiar with Angela’s work on Sirius XM’s Shade 45, you’re sleeping.  She’s a cool, hilarious, cultured hip-hop head…can you say wifey material?  Well, depending on how you view her Lip Service show haaaa…but I digress…enjoy SNSS!

Show #275 (9-5-10)

  1. Lupe Fiasco – “Go To Sleep”
  2. Aleon Craft ft. Hollyweerd – “Wonderland (Remix)”
  3. Freddie Gibbs – “Personal O.G.”
  4. Nottz Raw & Asher Roth – “Enforce The Law”
  5. Skyzoo & Illmind – “Speakers On Blast”
  6. Black Milk ft. Royce Da 5’9” & Elzhi – “Deadly Medley”
  7. **INTERVIEW WITH THEE SATISFACTION**
  8. The Physics – “I Just Wanna Beat” (Local Music)
  9. The Foreign Exchange – “Maybe She’ll Dream Of Me”
  10. J. Cole – “Blow Up”

J. Cole web chat with Sound Session (video)

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session, Videos on September 8th, 2010 by Hyphen

The homey J. Cole was in town over the weekend for our Bumbershoot Festival and he came through the Sound Session studio to kick it with us.  We recorded a normal interview, which we’ll air soon and also post here, but in the interim, you can peep the archive of the live UStream web chat that we did with almost a thousand listeners logged in to the room.

Cole ran through some random questions from his fans in the chat and I tossed him some that people were tweeting us at the same time.  He talked about everything from his album, his upcoming mixtape, his touring, his favorite athletes, and much more.  If you’re looking for a more formal interview, peep our sit down with Cole the last time here was in town right here.  We’ll also have a new interview shortly…

Big shout to Cole, his crew, and the label homies…all some of my favorite folks to chop it up with.  Continued success…Roc Nation in the building.

COLE WORLD.

As I mentioned last week, we were joined in the studio by the lovely Anjulie on the most recent edition of Sound Session.  It’s always a blast to hang out with talented artists that are also cool people, which isn’t quite as common as you might think.  Anjulie’s self titled album is in stores (and Starbucks) now…be sure you cop it and support one of the dopest up and coming singers around.  If you need more proof, check her out in person when she hits your town for the Raphael Saadiq tour.  Trust me.

Also, if you missed it, peep the video for our full interview with Jay-Z’s first signing to his Roc Nation label, J. Cole.  This kid is destined for huge things, so if you aren’t familiar, catch up right here!

J. Cole on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on November 15th, 2009 by Hyphen

A few weeks back on Sound Session, we had the pleasure of chopping it up with one of hip-hop’s rising stars, J. Cole, during his first trip to Seattle.  I’ll admit that I wasn’t up on J back when The Come Up dropped, but a few homies recommended it shortly after the release, and I once I checked it out, I was hooked.  Now that The Warm Up has solidified his “got next” status and he’s on tour with Jay-Z, it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a household name.

Peep our 3 part interview with Cole to hear him discuss all sorts of topics:

Part 1:

(watch on HyphenTV)

  • His background and influences
  • How he found his own voice on the mic
  • His first rap names
  • The tenacity in his delivery
  • How graduating college helped him as an artist and person
  • His experiences hustling beats as a producer

Part 2:

(watch on HyphenTV)

  • His audition with Jay-Z and when he got signed to Roc Nation
  • The Come Up vs. The Warm Up
  • The state of his basketball game these days
  • The Blueprint 3 tour and Jay’s cosign
  • The status of his debut album
  • His production influences

Part 3:

(watch on HyphenTV)

  • Where he sees himself in 5 years
  • What he would change about the music industry
  • His 5 favorite foods
  • The decline of MySpace

You can also download the entire interview, including some topics that weren’t included in the video segments, right here:
