Jenesis Magazine – January 2010 issue featuring…me!

Posted in News, Sound Session on January 11th, 2010 by Hyphen

I never thought I’d ever utter the words, “I’m on the cover of a magazine,” but thanks to Thomas and the good folks over at Jenesis, I can cross that off the bucket list!  If you aren’t familiar with Jenesis, it’s a really dope online mag that everyone who frequents this site should enjoy.  They routinely profile great artists and show love to pretty much everyone that we support via TAOD and Sound Session.  Be sure to download this month’s article to check out the feature on yours truly, along with some dope pieces that round out the “DJ’s vs. Bloggers Issue.”

Download hereJanuary 2010 Jenesis Magazine

Much like the article in the Seattle P.I. highlighting J. Moore, SNSS, and myself, I’m flattered and very appreciative of the support Jenesis is giving with this piece.  Many thanks to the owner Thomas Agnew and the writer Mike Wilson.  Thanks fellas!

Sound Session: The Best Radio Show You’ve Never Heard

Posted in News, Other Peoples' Interviews, Sound Session on January 8th, 2010 by Hyphen

As I mentioned in this week’s show archive, Sunday Night Sound Session was recently featured in the Seattle P.I. thanks to one of their writers, Elliott Smith (thanks Elliott!).  Now I know you’re all quite familiar with SNSS if you’ve found your way here to TAOD, but for those that weren’t aware, this article has proven to be a great look.  We’ve had a TON of folks reach out to express their gratitude and really, we’ll kick it right back to y’all.  While we take great pride in how much work we put into the show and we fully recognize the responsibility we have, the bottom line is that without you, we don’t exist.  Without people who actually love and live this music and culture, SNSS falls on deaf ears.

As music lovers, we’re a dying breed.  Sure, more people consume music than ever before, but how many really love and appreciate it?  For those that do, SNSS represents a rare opportunity to broadcast genuine music with substance over a 100,000-watt Clear Channel signal.

Hov admitted he dumbed down the flow to double his dollars.  We’ll never do that.  We don’t exist for any other reason than to play music we believe in…music from the soul.  We need artists to continue making it and we need YOU, the real music lover, to continue supporting it.  We’ll do our part as the conduit, believe that.

‘Sunday Night Sound Session’: The best radio show you’ve never heard

By ELLIOTT SMITH
SPECIAL TO SEATTLEPI.COM

The caller, voice dripping with gratitude, has one more thing to add before he hangs up.

“Thank you guys for playing so much good music,” he says.

Sounds like the provenance of satellite radio, no? Or perhaps even Seattle’s beloved KEXP?

On this night, at this hour, however, the station in question is KUBE-93. That’s right, the same KUBE that is widely seen as a corporate behemoth with a playlist as deep as a puddle is actually home to the best radio show you’ve probably never heard: “Sunday Night Sound Session.”

From 10:45 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. each Sunday, hosts DJ Hyphen and J. Moore play the latest and greatest in hip hop from both a national and local perspective — 90 minutes that are unlike any other in the KUBE lineup.

“Our show almost operates in opposition with KUBE,” said DJ Hyphen, aka Dorian Bunker-Pardo. “But all we’re focused on is good music. It’s deeper than just playing a record. It’s about something you can appreciate, something you can feel.”

You won’t hear the latest from 50 Cent here; instead Hyphen and Moore focus on artists that generally aren’t part of the everyday KUBE lineup.

The genesis of “Sunday Night Sound Session” came out of the rubble of a similar show, “Future Flavors,” which ran on KUBE for many years. But when it came to revamping the show, KUBE wanted to go in a different direction.

“We wanted to take a different approach to what Seattle hip hop fans were asking for,” KUBE Program Director Eric Powers said. “They’re both great shows but for different reasons. We wanted to talk to more of a hip-hop audience because of the music that was coming out locally and nationally.”

Finding credible hosts for the show was critical. With a background in college radio and a job working at KUBE, Hyphen became an obvious candidate.

“They were like, ‘Wow, this guy is a hip-hop nerd,’ ” Hyphen said.

To provide a local voice, Powers and Co. turned to the person that anyone who has ever been to a rap show in Seattle is familiar with.

J. Moore is an artist, hypeman, producer, booking agent, manager, ambassador, community leader — if it’s hip hop in Seattle, he’s probably got his hand in it. Radio host wasn’t exactly something he had thought about when the opportunity was presented to him.

“It sounded interesting, but I had to think about it so it wasn’t like I was putting myself in a position to perpetuate tokenism,” Moore said. “I was like, as long as we have control over programming — our own playlist — that was the main thing, just making sure we have the ability to be autonomous and establish our own identity. A brand within the brand. And that’s what ‘Sunday Night Sound Session’ is.”

The DJ Hyphen-J. Moore pairing was received well within the Seattle hip-hop scene, and four-plus years later, the show is still going strong.

“Being at the station that they are at, with the long history of alienation from Seattle hip hop that it’s had, their credibility is quite vital,” said Larry Mizell Jr., another important fixture in the Seattle hip-hop scene as an artist (Cancer Rising), media critic (Stranger columnist) and fellow radio host (KEXP’s “Street Sounds”).

“J. Moore is a fixture of Seattle hip hop — if you ask anybody in the scene about ‘the mayor,’ they’ll know who you mean, and it ain’t Mike McGinn — and very few could hope to match his years of contribution and sacrifice to this scene,” Mizell said.

“Hyphen is a consummate pro, sharp as hell and always looking for new stuff. Their taste is great and varied, and they’re able to put together a high-quality, entertaining and enlightening program every week that in my opinion few in Seattle, let alone anyone at KUBE-93, could pull off.”

At this point, SNSS isn’t just spinning records in a vacuum. It is breaking artists on both a local and national level, and have some of hip hop’s biggest luminaries stopping by the studio to talk shop.

“We’re definitely doing something right when fans around the city like it, people around the world like it, the artists like it, the labels like it — we haven’t had too many complaints,” Hyphen said. “The more support we get, it makes KUBE look better.

“We’re really appreciative of KUBE giving us this framework and letting us do what we want with it. It’s insanely rare. At 10:45 KUBE hands over the keys, and the kids get to drive and go wherever we want. As long as we bring it back in one piece at 12:15, KUBE’s excited about it.”

One of the results of the show’s success is the thought that anyone with a mic and some rhymes can make it on the radio. The show receives hundreds of submissions from aspiring artists, most of which aren’t radio ready. The show’s local slots are highly coveted, and often leave Seattle-area up-and-comers wondering why they aren’t getting airplay.

“We’re active participants in the life and the scene, so we’re going to hear from producers, engineers — people who are involved — about what the buzz is.” Moore said.

“We’re not passively waiting for people to send us music so we can sit back like a panel judging music.

“There’s a complete lack of understanding of the rite of passage that is necessary. It’s about development. That would be like me saying, I’m going to be a professional basketball player because I like basketball.”

Powers says that the show does draw decent ratings, but “what’s more important is that we allow other music to be heard, discovered and exposed from a local and national level.”

So what’s next for Hyphen and Moore and their little Sunday night show that could?

“It would be nice if we could expand the show on (Sundays),” Moore said. “And it would be nice if we could add an additional day or move to another day. That’s just for radio land. But something that (Hyphen) and I have always talked about it is being creative about utilizing this platform to create something for this brand that can exist beyond the radio and beyond Sunday night.”

Wherever SNSS goes in the future, right now, the pair enjoys being able to broadcast what they love to an appreciative audience.

“It’s a platform to express your ideas and opinions, but whatever we say just has 100,000 watts behind it,” Hyphen said. “So we play the same music that we’d play if we were choppin’ it up or hanging out or driving to the club. Now we get to blast it out — it’s our 100,000-watt iPod.

“We’re really thankful that we have this opportunity. We’re stand-up dudes who love the music, and that’s how we got the show.”

And with that, Moore and Hyphen pack up their gear and flip the switch back to the station’s automatic overnight programming, where they are greeted by the latest 50 Cent song.

They laugh and turn out the lights.

Sound Session #239 (12-27-09) – Best of 2009

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on December 29th, 2009 by Hyphen

Well, another year has come and gone and that can mean only one thing: you’re being constantly bombarded with “Best of 2009” lists everywhere you look.  This year, you’re probably also getting hit with “Best of the Decade” lists, which I personally find far more interesting to debate than the standard year-end recaps.  While we didn’t put together any best of the 2000’s (off the top…my favorite albums were “College Dropout,” “Graduation,” “The Blueprint,” “A Piece Of Strange,” “The Listening,” and “Connected,” among MANY others), J. Moore and I did compile our favorite Sound Session records from the past year for you.

Keep in mind, these are not the biggest records of the year…nor the blogosphere favorites…or Twitter picks.  Nah, these are 26 of our favorite songs that we played heavily on SNSS in 2009.  They are not in any sort of countdown or follow any other ranking schema.  We included a few of our favorite records from the town and crossed into other genres as well.  In other words, we followed our normal formula for spinning great music on the radio, but we just supersized it on some Barry Bonds-Roger Clemons-Alex Rodriguez super powered steroid type steez.

I’ve included some extra notes and honorable mentions for my fellow music nerds who want to see behind the curtain a little.  Of course, you can always just download the show and trust the opinions of your friendly neighborhood dope connoisseurs.  It’s unique.  It’s one of a kind.  It’s Sound Session.

Show #239 (12-27-09)
Best of 2009

  1. Jay-Z – “D.O.A. (Death Of Autotune)”
  2. J. Cole – “Lights Please”
  3. Clipse ft. Kanye West – “Kinda Like A Big Deal”
  4. Big Boi ft. Too $hort & George Clinton – “For Yo’ Sorrows”
  5. Consequence ft. Kanye West & John Legend – “Whatever U Want”
  6. The Roots – “How I Got Over”
  7. Mayer Hawthorne – “Maybe So, Maybe No”
  8. John Legend – “Lay Your Head Down”
  9. Drake – “November 18th”
  10. The Physics – “I Just Wanna Beat” (Local Music)
  11. Outasight – “Brand New Day”
  12. Pac Div – “Young Black Male”
  13. Jay Electronica – “Exhibit C”
  14. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – “Otherside” (Local Music)
  15. Mos Def ft. Slick Rick – “Auditorium”
  16. U-N-I – “Land Of The Kings”
  17. Little Dragon – “Never, Never”
  18. Goapele – “Milk & Honey”
  19. Mr. Hudson ft. Kanye West – “Supernova”
  20. Lupe Fiasco ft. Matthew Santos – “Shining Down”
  21. Raekwon ft. Cappadonna & Ghostface Killah – “10 Bricks”

Notes:

  1. The first, best, and most powerful record off Blueprint 3.
  2. The 2 best albums this year were mixtapes and J. Cole had one of ’em.
  3. “Popular Demand” was up there too, but Khalil & ‘Ye joined Pusha & Malice to make this a lock.
  4. Sure, it’s an awesome record. But you wanted to hear Dre on it too, huh?
  5. Only problem with this Grammy Family song? It’s too short for all that talent.
  6. Is this the only official Roots song they released in 2009? At least they made it count.
  7. “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” came out in 2008 (or was it even ’07?), but the Mayer had a few contenders for song of the year.
  8. An unreleased record that leaked this year, though it sounded straight out the Motown era.
  9. So Far Gone was my mixtape album of the year and you could have picked about 10 Drake records to represent the 2009 Rookie of the Year.
  10. My favorite track from Seattle in 2009, the Physics’ ode to keeping the relationship simple was completely too ill. Girls didn’t want to like it, but they had to.
  11. OU’s unique style melded with insane production to result in this optimistic anthem.
  12. “Pac Div” or “Mayor” were also flawless, but Like, Mibbs, and BeYoung were at their best when slightly more serious.
  13. The radio rip caused a furor, the CDQ killed teh internets. The net’s golden child dropped the excellent “Exhibit A” as well.
  14. Mack is one of Seattle’s best (no pun – peep “The Town“) and he opened his heart on this one. Killed our phones with every spin too.
  15. Madlib on the beat, Mos remembering he can rhyme, and a Ruler verse for good measure? Check please.
  16. A few joints off A Love Supreme could have been included but the GLS single helped Thurz & Y-O break through.
  17. Our Swedish indie pop/electro/soul/downtempo/whateveryouwanttheygot darlings dropped another classic LP with Machine Dreams.
  18. People should know better than to sleep on Goapele. This should have been on everyone’s Best Of list.
  19. “Just give [him] a chaaaaaaance.” 808’s & Heartbreaks records from ‘Ye get better with every listen.
  20. Biggest missed opportunity of ’09. Could have been huge, but no push, no video, no album. Lu’s on another level though.
  21. Could have told me this was on the original Purple Tape and I would have believed you. Even Cappa sounds ill on it. Dilla!
  22. Royce murdered mics all year but he rode this Quincy Tones produced banger perfectly.
  23. Rik Rude & P-Smoov dropped one of the best albums of the year, but outside the NW, too many haven’t heard it. Wake up.
  24. Not the best Bun verse, but Daytona’s ill flow and the mellow beat were intoxicating.
  25. Like Royce, Crook beat up beats all year (word to Jersey Shore) but Wicked served up classics for him here.
  26. Tay & Nic followed up the 5 Mic Connected by switching up the sound and still got nominated for a Grammy. FTW.

Honorable mentions from artists not otherwise represented:

Special shout to the homey Shad as well.  America just started to catch on to his incredible The Old Prince album in 2009, but technically, the music had been released a few years ago in Canada.  Either way, he supplied us with a lot of great records to play this past year.

Again, far from comprehensive, but hopefully some of these songs resonated with you as much as they did with us in 2009.  Send any and all feedback this way.  I need something to occupy my time while the whole industry is closed up until the 4th.  See you all in 2010, peace and happiness to you and yours.

D. Black on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on September 3rd, 2009 by Hyphen

D. Black and the Sport’n Life crew came through Sound Session recently to talk all about D’s upcoming Ali’Yah album that drops on the 15th.  Always a pleasure to open the SNSS studio up to dope artists, but it’s especially fun to chill with good people.  Download the whole audio of the show right here.

D.Black, a Seattle-based rising hip-hop artist, took some time out to visit the good folks J. Moore and DJ Hyphen over at KUBE 93 for Sunday Night Sessions to speak about his newest release Ali’Yah. While talking about Ali’Yah, D.Black made special note of the increase in maturity and artistic development since his last album. That maturity is evident on such songs as the recently released “Yesterday,” the first single off Ali’Yah, and when asked about the song D.Black explained the concept saying, “All of us have had situations in our past that if we look back at it, we breathe life back into it. So it’s better to leave yesterday behind and look forward to tomorrow.” The positive vibe was reflected back by the fans as well as D.Black spoke with a few folks who called. D.Black also spoke on the opportunity he had to work with so many talented artists while crafting Ali’Yah, noting the contributions of fellow artists Jake One, Vitamin D, B. Brown, Melissa, Choklate, Spaceman, Kuddie Mak and many others. Be on the lookout for D.Black’s newest album Ali’Yah available September 15th via Sport’n Life Records/MYX Music Label.

Sound Session #218 (8-2-09)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on August 4th, 2009 by Hyphen

I’m not sure if it’s just a natural part of getting older, but it seems like an inordinate number of people in the public eye have passed away this summer.  We’ve had to start our show with RIP shouts almost every week, and sadly this edition of SNSS was no different.

By now, you’ve probably heard that we lost yet another member of the legendary Slum Village family, Baatin, last week, but I also got news that an old friend of mine passed too.  Jose Hernando was a great friend of my family and even rented a room from us when I was in 7th and 8th grade.  For those two years, he was almost like a big brother to me and I’ll always remember those days fondly.  We used to play all sorts of video games and he was always there to help with anything I needed.  He was also a semi-pro bicyclist and was training a few weeks ago near Seward Park when a van hit him and placed him into a coma.  After fighting bravely, he passed in peace on the 24th.  He’ll be survived by his wife Chanel, his two children, and all the people he touched throughout his life.  You couldn’t wish to know a nicer and cooler guy, and I’m happy I was able to have Jose in my life, even though it was far too brief.  I really wish we could have caught up before all this happened.

You hear it all the time, but it’s so important not to take life for granted.  Reach out to your friends and family and tell ’em you love ’em.  You never know what life will bring, so live each day to the fullest and be the best person you can be.  We’re all in this together and our interaction and relationships are what make life special.  I hope you’re all doing well and if I haven’t talked to you in a while, let’s catch up – DJHyphen@gmail.com.

Sound Session #216 (7-19-09)

Posted in Artists, Episodes, Sound Session on July 20th, 2009 by Hyphen

While the weather has been nice out here in Seattle for a while (yes, we do have nice weather, shocking, I know), it’s finally starting to feel like summer.  This weekend featured the annual “Bite Of Seattle” festival, an awesome exhibition match between Chelsea FC and the Seattle Sounders in front of 66K at Qwest Field, and A-Trak & Theophilus London shutting down Chop Suey.  All of this under 80 degree sunny skies mind you…and now this coming weekend will feature our KUBE Summer Jam at White River Amphitheater.  Nothing like summer in the SEA.

On this week’s show, we played new cuts from folks like Killer Mike, Donnis, J. Cole, Pac Div, Goapele, Slaughterhouse, Mr. Hudson, Rakim, and more.  We also ran a joint from the big homey Jake One off his project with Freeway, along with world premiering the final version of Nas’ “Film.”  The version that you’ve heard floating around the net features the original beat from last year’s Red Bull Big Tune winner, C-Sick, but the final version sports revamped and replayed music, along with the proper mixing and mastering.  With our very own J. Moore co-writing the hook, you know we had to drop the official version of that big tune.

Last but not least, shout to Consequence for calling in to talk about his new single with Kanye & John Legend (the joint is crazy) and his upcoming Cons TV album.  “It’s the Cons fool…word!”

Exile on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on June 7th, 2009 by Hyphen

There are some artists in this industry who are talented, and then there are a few that seem to be on another level, closer to genius status.  I won’t put the pressure on the homey Exile by calling him a genius, but he’s clearly working on another plane than your average ‘dope’ producer.  Between his beats, his live MPC performances, his beatboxing, and even his rapping, he hears things that we don’t, and puts sounds together in ways that we would never think to do.

A little while back, Ex came through Sound Session to talk all about his latest opus, Radio, an album crafted entirely out of sounds culled from his home radio.  He detailed the creative process behind the project and how it gave him a deeper respect for radio in general.  He also talked about his crazy live MPC sets with DJ Day, how his family influenced his music, his upcoming Boy Meets World album with Fashawn, a follow up to Blu’s Below The Heavens, and the 2892412931 other projects he’s got on his plate.  Check it all out right here:
