Sound Session #249 (3-7-10)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on March 9th, 2010 by Hyphen

So…I would write a quick wrap up of yet another dope edition of Sound Session, but in all honesty, there’s only one thing consuming every waking moment of my life right now.  Oh yes, that’s right.  Young Hyph is in the process of becoming a first time home owner.  While it’s a daunting step to take, it’s exciting to wander down this path and we’ll see where it takes me.  For now, I’ve got my eye on this one spot downtown…really nice location, incredible views, iconic building…perhaps you’ve seen it?

But nah, in all seriousness…[Hov] it’s…about…to go…down [/Jay].  Any advice from those who have been through the process recently would be much appreciated.  In the meantime, holler @ some dopeness:

Mayer Hawthorne – I Wish That It Would Rain (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on March 2nd, 2010 by Hyphen

On the real, this is one of the problems about living in Southern California.  I remember being down there when it’s sunny damn near the whole year and, noEeyore, sometimes you’re in the mood for the weather to be a little cloudy/rainy.  Alright fine, perhaps not to the degree that we get here in Seattle, but there are definitely days where it feels more comfortable than 80 degree sunshine.

Oh…and of course you already know, Mayer’s impeccable album, A Strange Arrangement, is in stores now.  Cop that.

Sound Session #247 (2-21-10)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on February 23rd, 2010 by Hyphen

Ok, I must admit, it’s a little sad that the site has pretty much been reduced to Sound Session episodes and little else, but I’ll work on that.  Perhaps I’ll bring back Wack Lyric of the Day, I’ve been letting a lot of y’all rappers slide.

Anyway, it’s been pretty hectic lately and like I mentioned last week, I’m completely locked in to the Olympics.  From skicross to hockey, the action has been incredible, though I did finally find an event that completely sucks.  That’s right ice dancing: you…are…awful.

In short, imagine figure skating (sigh) without the athletic tricks and jumps…ok, that’s rough enough, right?  Now…add themes (often offensive to your morality, if not your senses), an obscene amount of make up, music seemingly stolen from John Tesh’s unreleased vaults, and the douchiest overall presentation of any event in the Games, and you’ve got yourself ice dancing.  Even the other figure skaters think it’s “a trifle dramatic.”  It’s painful to watch hockey all day and then see NBC broadcast ballet on ice, minus the aerials, during prime time.  I keep hoping Ovechkin will come out of nowhere to treat Belbin and Agosto like Jagr, but sadly, they seem to use different venues for these events.

The only thing that provides an appropriate recovery after being exposed to ice dancing is, of course, Sound Session.  Enjoy.

Show #247 (2-21-10)

  1. Nas & Damian Marley – “Strong Will Continue”
  2. Strong Arm Steady ft. Phonte – “Best Of Times”
  3. H.O.P.E. – “Me&Her”
  4. Jern Eye ft. Spank Pops & J-Billion – “Cali”
  5. Freeway & Jake One ft. Young Chris – “Microphone Killa” (Local Music)
  6. Statik Selektah ft. Lil’ Fame, Havoc, & Kool G Rap – “Do It 2 Death”
  7. Sean Price – “Shut The F*ck Up”
  8. Nottz – “Shine So Brite”
  9. Spaid – “Love Affair” (Local Music)
  10. B.o.B ft. Asher Roth – “F*ck The Money”
  11. El Prez – “Burger Time”
  12. TiRon – “For Your Smile”
  13. Kidz In The Hall ft. Jay Electronica – “Cool, Relax”
  14. Kooley High ft. Median – “Solitude”

Sound Session #246 (2-14-10)

Posted in Interviews, Sound Session, Sports on February 15th, 2010 by Hyphen

Ok, I tried to hold out.  I watched the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics and aside from a few cool moments, I concluded that it was far inferior to Beijing’s pageantry a few years earlier (though my Canadian friend astutely pointed out, “at least ours was real“).  I thought the lack of an electric superstar that the summer games seem filled with wouldn’t hold my attention.  And while Kanye is probably constructing a blog post about the figure skating outfits as we speak, it’s safe to say us sports lovers don’t usually get too involved with ballet on ice.  Besides, with it being NBA All-Star Weekend, Valentine’s Day, and my birthday all rolled into one, there was no way that I’d get wrapped up in the Olympics, right?

Wrong.

Even if the sports are questionable at times (curling is actually really interesting…for about 20 minutes) and even if the weather isn’t cooperating, there’s still something incredible about the Olympics.  These athletes spend every waking moment of their lives working towards one moment, and to see them either thrive or fail with such high stakes at play is riveting.  Plus, I know a lot of sports fans cringe at the “puff pieces” that NBC packages with the Games, but eff it, I like ’em.  If you watched the report on Alexandre Bilodeau‘s handicapped brother and didn’t root for him to win Canada’s first gold on home soil, you have no soul.  His run in the moguls was the most exciting, and fulfilling, part of the whole weekend, hands down.  Well, aside from this week’s Sound Session of course.

Check out the latest episode featuring new music from Cypress Hill, Nas & Damian Marley, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, Nneka, B.o.B, El Prez, and more, plus a special Throwback for those who may not have had the Valentine’s Day they were after.  Enjoy:

Sound Session #244 (1-31-10)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on February 2nd, 2010 by Hyphen

Big shout to the homey MiC K!NG (formerly known as iCON The Mic King) for co-hosting this week’s episode of SNSS with us.  If you haven’t checked out his new project with Chum, what are you waiting for?

It’s always fun to kick it with cool folks, and when they happen to be dope MC’s on top of that, it’s even better.  That’s rare, by the way.  There’s generally an inverse relationship between your level of talent and how nice you are.  Hit me and I’ll give you some examples, if you can’t think of a few on your own…

Anyway, peep episode #244 for all sorts of dopeness and the debut of our new Throwback of the Week feature.  Sometimes we get a little tired of the new selections we pick from each week and we figured we could educate some of our listeners with a classic jawn each show.  If you don’t like this week’s pick, you might as well stop checking for SNSS cause “What They Do” is flawless.

Oh, and shout to Nneka for calling in as well.  Her Concrete Jungle album hits stores today and it’s already racking up great reviews left and right.  I’ve been rocking the album and her mixtape with J. Period a lot recently and all the praise is well deserved.  Get on the bandwagon now before it’s filled up!  Full interview coming soon (I feel like I say that every week…bah…gonna find some free time to get those online for y’all soon).

Show #244 (1-31-10)
**Co-hosted by MiC K!NG**

  1. The Knux – “Floozy”
  2. Pill ft. Freddie Gibbs – “Run Up To Me”
  3. Diamond District – “Who I Be (Marco Polo Remix)”

  6. Lupe Fiasco – “The One Freestyle”
  7. D. Black ft. Fatal Lucciauno – “Special” (Local Music)
  8. RJD2 ft. Phonte – “The Shining Path”

Foundation Crossfit Grand Opening on Sunday!

Posted in News, Random Ish, Sports on January 30th, 2010 by Hyphen

Those of you who know me in real life have probably heard me talk (at length) about a style of working out called crossfit.  Ever since the homey Dru introduced it to me, I’ve been a fan.  In short, it focuses on simple movements performed at a high level for short periods of time.  It’s way more efficient and challenging than simply lifting weights and I would recommend everyone check it out, regardless of your level of fitness.

Seattle people should come check it out tomorrow at the grand opening for Dru’s new space.  Foundation Crossfit has been around for a few years, but come check out the new spot and find out about these workouts that will change your life.  Tomorrow’s schedule is as follows:

Foundation CrossFit
1422 11th Ave
Seattle, WA 98122
(Down the driveway underneath the rear entrance of Pac Supply Company. Look for the orange building.)

Sunday, January 31, 2010

11:00 – 12:00 Meet & Greet / Social Hour
12:00 – 12:30 Introduction to CrossFit
12:30 – 13:00 Workout Demos, Q&A
13:00 – 14:00 Group Workout
14:00 – 16:00 Open House

See you there.
