Super duper big time shout to Aloe Blacc coming through the studio this past week to bless us with an exclusive performance of his “Politician” record.  If you aren’t aware, Aloe has been a dope MC for years but in the last few, he’s started to branch out and really illustrate his musical genius.  His new project, Good Things, is, simply put, incredible.  It’s one of the best albums of the year and a throwback to when soul music not only sounded great, but also pushed buttons in society.  Nowhere is this more evident with “Politician,” a track that only appears as an instrumental reprise on the album.

As I was jotting down this week’s playlist, I looked at the date and thought, “hmm…May…isn’t that supposed to signify something special?”  I suppose this is how married folks feel when anniversary time comes around (speaking of which, happy anniversary to the ‘rents! And Happy Mother’s Day as well! Love you guys).  You realize you’re supposed to do something, but you can’t remember exactly what.

After checking my ring finger, I realized, no…I’m not married…but damn, this past week marks 5 full years of Sound Session on the air at KUBE 93.  Our very first episode was on May 8th, 2005 and 257 shows later, here we are at May 9th, 2010.  Since we tend to keep track of milestones by episode rather than date, J. Moore and I didn’t even realize it until just now.  While we’re certainly proud of hosting an independent hip-hop show on commercial radio without compromising one iota for 5 years, as we’ve always maintained, everything we do actually has little to do with us.  Instead, it has everything to do with the artists, the listeners, the higher ups who believe in our abilities, and most importantly, the culture that we live and breathe every day.

Even when we play non-hip-hop records, we are hip-hop in our mindset, ideals, and actions.  The folks that can relate also know that you do what you do without any need for praise or recognition.  You do it because you don’t know any other way.  That’s Sound Session and that’s why 5 years have gone by in a blink of an eye.  Here’s to many more…

Another fun episode of SNSS this week and another great weekend full of dope shows here in Seattle.  Not only did Freeway and Jake One cap off the weekend with an epic performance at the Stimulus Package release party on Sunday night, but one of our favorite groups out there, Little Dragon, made their second appearance in the town on Friday.  J. As I mentioned last week, we were joined in the studio by the lovely Anjulie on the most recent edition of Sound Session.  It’s always a blast to hang out with talented artists that are also cool people, which isn’t quite as common as you might think.  Anjulie’s self titled album is in stores (and Starbucks) now…be sure you cop it and support one of the dopest up and coming singers around.  If you need more proof, check her out in person when she hits your town for the Raphael Saadiq tour.  Trust me.

Weekends like these don’t come along too often.

This past Saturday, Jay-Z performed in Seattle for the first time in 10 years (apparently Bill Gates needs to remind Hov about our lovely city) and pretty much shut down the city.  Aside from a few Blueprint 3 songs that really have no business being performed at a Jay-Z show, the concert was epic from start to finish.  Call me old fashioned, but I’d like to see at least one song from Reasonable Doubt (“Dead Presidents”!?!?!) or In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 (“A Million and One Questions”!?!?!?) rather than “On To The Next One.”  Maybe that’s just me.  *Kanye shrug*

That said, in front of a sold out Key Arena, Jay killed it from beginning to end and the opening lineup of J. Cole, Wale, and N.E.R.D. was excellent.  Big shout to all those artists for coming through the studio before the show.  We’ll have interviews with them coming soon…
