Sound Session #364 (6-3-12)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on June 6th, 2012 by Hyphen

On this week’s SNSS, we brought back one half of Grammy Award winning, multi-platinum production group, Tha Bizness, and Henny brought Dow Jones with him this time to complete the crew.  A few days prior, J. Moore and I had the pleasure of appearing on their panel about “How The Music Industry Really Works In 2012” alongside Jake One, Macklemore, BBoy (Two In The Shirts clothing), Sermon’s Domain, Miss Casey Carter, Eddie Francis, and the Sacramento Kings’ starting point guard, Isaiah Thomas.  We had a great discussion and I can’t wait until Henny & Dow do it again next year, even bigger.  Peep Sermon’s recap here.  Much respect to everyone involved!

We were also joined in studio by one of our favorite producers, Marcus D, who  just released his new Melancholy Hopeful album with appearances by Substantial, One Be Lo, Luck One, Choklate, Cise Star, Funky DL, and more.  Cop it here!

PROPS! also came through to debut his new track with Stalley (produced by Vitamin D) and give out some tickets to their show next week, alongside Miss Casey Carter and Chikara (from Rock Paper Scissors).  Stalley will be doing an in-store appearance at RPS at 3pm on the 10th before their show, so check that out and grab an autograph from one of MMG’s finest.

On top of all that, we played joints.  New music from 50, Ab-Soul, Meek Mill, Drake, Big Boi, Rashad, Curren$y, Big K.R.I.T., and more, plus we world premiered a new cut from Jimi 84 (formerly known as Yonas Michael, who is formerly Y-O from U-N-I).  Super dope record.  Enjoy the show!

Super busy reviewing a TON of resumes for that job posting I mentioned last week, so I’ll keep this week’s SNSS update to a minimum.  Having the ability to hire someone and potentially change his/her life is somewhat daunting.  No one Hyphen should have all this power.

Sound Session #257 (5-2-10)

Posted in Episodes, Interviews, Sound Session on May 4th, 2010 by Hyphen

This week’s SNSS was one of my favorites in quite some time.  We were joined in studio by Grynch, DJ Nphared, and Marcus D, plus we had Substantial and Oddisee call in from the East Coast.  All are dope musicians and good people, so it’s always a pleasure to chop it up with them.  Additionally, we played a ton of great music (well, what’s new) from some of our favorite artists.  Here’s my quick 2 cents on a few of the records:

  • B.o.B & Lupe – can’t wait to see these guys at the Showbox Sodo on Friday
  • N.E.R.D. – I still insist there is no better job in music than being Pharrell
  • M.I.A. – I can’t hear this record without breaking something.  Uber hard.
  • Shad – there’s nobody in the game that makes me rewind for lyrics more than Shad K.  TSOL drops May 25th!
  • Kendrick Lamar – the definition of “spazzing” on a beat
  • Tunji – reminds me of “Paris, Tokyo” in a way…
  • J. Cole – I really wish they woulda left the b-word in the chorus for the radio edit. You can say that these days!
  • Donnis – This record is a sleeping giant. Isn’t Donnis working with Atlantic now? Why aren’t they pushing this? Smash hook.
  • Eminem – Lyrics/flow are insane, as usual, but shoulda got Drake for that chorus. Don’t laugh, it’s true.
  • Public Enemy – Arizona took another L this week, so we thought we’d remind them
  • Nas & Damian Marley – this might be the best album of the year when it’s all said and done
  • Drake – I love this record…and my Jansport still fits!  Imagine that.

Enjoy!
