J. Lately – Straight Outta Somewhere (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on June 26th, 2009 by Hyphen

I’m always down to check out some new talent, especially when it’s co-signed by some folks I respect.  Peep this new tape from J. Lately, featuring appearances by our fellow 5-C’er, Tunji, along with Co$$ and Bambu.  I’m about half way through and I’m impressed with J’s flow and wordplay so far.  The beats are ill too…

Reflection Eternal f/Res – Back Again (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on June 24th, 2009 by Hyphen

Since my day job works with music videos, I often get a sneak peak at clips before they get released.  We got this one in last week and since I’ve always loved the track (the beat is banoodles), I was hoping the visuals would live up to it.  Thankfully, Todd Angkasuwan, one of the illest up and coming directors in the game, did the song justice and killed it with the one take approach.

Shout to Talib, Corey, Tunji, S.A.S., and the whole Blacksmith fam.  Cop “Back Again” on iTunes right here.

Inverse – Keys To The City: LA

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on June 17th, 2009 by Hyphen

Tunji and Toby linked up with Yours Truly and GregTheDude for a Los Angeles edition of the Keys 2 The City series:

Inverse gives you an insider’s tour of the finer restaurants that populate the City of Angels such as Tito’s Tacos and IN-N-OUT Burger, all while shedding some light on their backstory. As Los Angeles brims with the talented new voices it’s inspired, Inverse takes the lead and treats us to a set of fresh acapellas. If you like what you hear, cop the So True EP on iTunes or Amazon and support independent artists.

Amen.  Sidenote, I think I was with them after a late night studio session when we hit that Taco joint back in our college days.  Might not have been the same one, but either way, ahhh…the good ol’ days.

Asher Roth – Be By Myself (live)

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on April 8th, 2009 by Hyphen

LOL @ comparisons between Em and Asher right now.  Asher’s actually making songs.  Em’s making the same joke of a single for the 6th time.  Shrug.

This is the next single by the way, featuring Cee-Lo if you couldn’t tell.  Footage shot by the homey Tunji and the alley oop from GregTheDude.

Outasight – From There To Here (album prequel)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on March 17th, 2009 by Hyphen

Notice I didn’t call it a ‘mixtape’ hahah.  Outasight is a really talented artist coming out of NYC and he just teamed up with 6th Sense and Mick Boogie to drop this prequel before his official album is released.  There are all sorts of talented folks making appearances on this (Tunji, Cook Classics, Donny Goines, Oddisee, etc.), so you should already know.

Tunji x Cook Classics x Yoplait

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on March 13th, 2009 by Hyphen

Hahaha, Tunj is hilarious.  I remember GregTheDude shot me this video along with the earlier clip of Tunj freestyling with Cook about the New Classics mixtape the night he did ’em.  While the first free was dope, I was sad this one didn’t get released too…until now.

If you haven’t downloaded the mixtape, stop sleeping!

Vimby x UpOnThingz – The New Classics (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on February 26th, 2009 by Hyphen

The Vimby x UpOnThingz mixtape, The New Classics, dropped last week as a streamable project on iMeem, but it’s 2009…and that just doesn’t quite cut it these days. Here’s the full project for download, featuring incredible production from the homey Cook Classics and appearances by some of the best rising talent in the game: Shawn Jackson, Outasight, Avriel Epps, Emilio Rojas, Buff1, TiRon, Inverse, Pacific Division, 6th Sense, U-N-I, Convinced, Fashawn, and many, many more. If you need more of a reason to cop immediately, did you forget Tunji’s freestyle?

Cook Classics on Hip-Hop Official

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on February 25th, 2009 by Hyphen

Chyea, go ‘head Cook.  If you aren’t familiar with the homey Will, you need to get familiar.  He’s insanely talented and as he mentioned, he’s producing full ideas and making soundscapes that go above and beyond merely “making beats.”  [Mos] Get his rookie card now, while the price is cheap [/Def].

Shout to Greg, Tunj, and the whole 5-C’s.

Strong Arm Steady ft. Chace Infinite, Planet Asia, & Affion Crockett – Black History (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on February 10th, 2009 by Hyphen

In honor of Black History Month, the Blacksmith family has recorded this dope song and video where Phil Da Agony, Chace Infinite, Planet Asia, and Affion Crockett spit about their family heritage.  I’m not a huge fan of the beat, but the verses give you a little biography of each dude’s family tree, which is something dope that you rarely hear from MC’s.

Shout to Tunji for sending this one through as well.  Hit up the YOTB for more…

Blackstar at the House of Blues

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on February 10th, 2009 by Hyphen

Tunji just shot over this footage of Talib joining Mos for a little impromptu Blackstar performance at the House of Blues from last night down in Los Angeles.  Is it strange that hearing “Respiration” drop still gives me goosebumps a decade after it first came out?

Peep more over at the Year of the Blacksmith.
