Tunji – Still Risin’ (prod. by Kno)

Posted in Artists, Joints on September 9th, 2008 by Hyphen

Tunj

If for some reason you didn’t download the 2 Dope Boyz mixtape last week, slap yourself and grab the no-DJ version of one of the best tracks on there, Tunji‘s “Still Risin’.”  Sound Session listeners will recognize him from his Inverse material we’ve played over the last year, plus he’s the dude ripping our show intro every week.  Astute heads will also remember this beat originally being used for Kno’s “Get Buck” remix, but he shot it to Tunj to do it justice.

Tunj on the mic and Kno on the beat?  It’s a wrap…

Invy + Ill Roots

One of the best blogs out there, illRoots, linked up with one half of Inverse, Tunji, for a quick Q&A session.  Tunj speaks about the group’s sound, their inspirations, and gives us a little information on their upcoming debut album, Long Day’s Journey.  You can peep the entire interview here.

If you still haven’t downloaded their So Far (The Collection) project, slap yourself and then grab it here.

The Roots at the 2008 UCLA Jazz & Reggae Festival

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on July 29th, 2008 by Hyphen

Aside from Kanye’s “Glow In The Dark Tour,” I’ve never seen anyone do a better live performance than the Roots.  Seeing as how I’ve caught them about 15 times vs. 4 for ‘Ye, I think the overall edge has to go to Legendary.  In this clip from OKP TV, there’s some dope performance footage and ?uestlove and Black Thought talk about their live show strategy.  Plus, Greg The Dude broke out the fisheye.  I love the fisheye.

The homey Tunji also helped put this together (as you can partly see in the mirror while Tariq is talking), and he has additional clips over at his site…peep ’em.

VIMBY – Inverse

Man, it’s so ill to see the homies Tunji and Toby making moves. Here’s a new video of Inverse‘s VIMBY showcase, where you can see a little interview and live performance. Random tidbit: I DJ’d that 2002 performance at the UC-Irvine Chili Cook-Off hahaha. Those were the days…

If you haven’t downloaded Inverse’s So Far…The Collection project, do it now. It’s one of the best releases of the year and you can grab it here. Also be sure to check their blog, Inverse Hip-Hop.

TiRon ft. Tunji (of Inverse) & Ayomari – Quitter

Posted in Artists, Joints on July 9th, 2008 by Hyphen

Tunji, TiRon, Ayomari
(image shamelessly jacked from Mr. Lee)

Seeing as how Tunji is one of the best MC’s out there (and happens to be an old friend), you know I’m going post everything Inverse related.  This is a new joint from another dope MC from Los Angeles, TiRon (who you heard on Sound Session with “Throwin’ My Money”), featuring Tunj and Ayomari, described as “a somber smoker’s/drinker’s anthem type joint.”  I don’t smoke or drink, but I can still vibe to this.  Produced by DJ Dahi, who might be linking up with Tunj for a joint on my mythical 7th edition of the Beats, Rhymes, and Life mixtape series.  The tape will happen.  I swear.

Wale – The Artistic Integrity (video)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes, Videos on June 26th, 2008 by Hyphen

Here’s the new video from DC’s finest (aka the second best Nigerian rapper I know), Wale, and super producer Rik Cordero.  This song stands for pretty much everything I believe in as a DJ.  Unfortunately, about 1% of the other DJ’s, artists, producers, and industry folk in the entertainment world feel the same way.  Big shout to you if you’re repping that 1% though.  Keep fighting the good fight with us.

“The Artistic Integrity” is off Wale’s excellent Seinfeld inspired project, The Mixtape About Nothing.  If you missed it when it dropped, you can catch up via the download right here.

Inverse featured on MySpace (again)!

Posted in Artists, Joints, Sound Session on June 10th, 2008 by Hyphen

Inverse

The longtime homies, Inverse, just got their second well deserved feature on MySpace. This time, along with being on the front of the “Music” section, they also got placement on the main login page. So when you sign in to listen to horrible musicians trying to befriend you and sell you crap stay up to date with your friends, look out for Toby and Tunji. You can also download their ridiculously dope So Far (The Collection) project off their page for free, so go get that if you’re sleeping. These guys are destined for big things people…get on the bandwagon now.

And if you’re thinking “Tunji…that name sounds familiar,” that’s cause you’ve been hearing this at 10:45 PM every Sunday night on KUBE 93.3 before we start our show:

Tunji – “Sunday Night Sound Session Intro”
