Naledge presents – Welcome To Brainiac Society (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on September 23rd, 2008 by Hyphen

cover

Whoo, this is super fresh.  Plus, since I’m working 3 jobs at the moment (“3 jobs mon!” – In Living Color skit), I definitely appreciate when people send me dope stuff along with a great description.  Naledge, take it away:

“Welcome To Brainiac Society is a compilation or collection of music that I like, and that I might have made or contributed to.  There’s no real rhyme or reason to it.  I think a lot of people got confused when I started repping Brainiac Society as my crew or my label cause I think a lot of people took it as a separation from Kidz In The Hall, which is not what it is.  It’s just me giving a platform to people that I like, and I want it to be looked at moreso as a Native Tongues type of thing than as a Bad Boy type of thing.  It’s just a group of people that make dope music and appreciate the artistry of Hip Hop and doesn’t have to necessarily mean they are rappers.  They can sing, they can make beats, DJ, whatever.  It’s about the creative renaissance that’s going on within Hip Hop all over the nation. These are people that I met in my travels who I feel are dope and they inspire me.  We just get together and we collectively make art…It’s also a platform for me to put out Fooch who is my artist.  It’s no departure from Kidz In The Hall.  Me and Double O are such creative beings in general, that we don’t know how to operate without 30 things going on at once.  We’re very much multi-taskers and we’ve always been that way.  We try to have our hands in everything.

RTC mixed it, it’s got new freestyles, some exclusive stuff, some stuff that’s been leaked on the internet, stuff that you might have forgot existed or never had or never downloaded on a a CD.  My hope with this is that people will download it, burn it to a CD, and just play it, or add it as a playlist to their ipod.  That’s really what it is, just a dope mix, a dope collection of music.  Talented individuals on all fronts, and I’m really excited about it.”

Featuring artists like Pacific Division, Fooch, Tanya Morgan, The Cool Kids, Skyzoo, 6th Sense, Wale, Naledge himself, and more, you know this is dope.  Back cover and download link after the jump.  Huge shout to Alex over at Ruby Hornet for putting this together!

Cee & Bekah – The Soul Movement, Vol. 2

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on September 17th, 2008 by Hyphen

Cee & Bekah

I posted up Notion’s tape yesterday, and as promised, here’s the rest of the new material from my new Australian homies, Cee & Bekah.  Again, if you’re unfamiliar, check their interviews with Kevin Nottingham and Travis @ Wake Your Daughter Up to get the scoop. Basically, Cee is the MC of the group and Bekah provides the soul with her singing.  The result is some dope, head nodding, boom bap with some real emotion and feeling put into the music.  Just like with Notion, this stuff is ill, but also be on the lookout for their upcoming material with some of the dopest people in our American underground scene.  Big things to come.

Notion – World Domi-Notion (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on September 16th, 2008 by Hyphen

Notion cover

The past few days, I’ve had the pleasure of chilling with some of Australia’s dopest artists, Cee, Bekah, and Notion, as they’ve been here touring the States.  Sound Session listeners heard them on our last show, where we talked about their background a bit and what the scene is like down under.  That interview didn’t do them justice though, so I highly recommend peeping these two links where Kevin Nottingham and Travis @ Wake Your Daughter Up really get in depth with The Movement Fam.  Big shout to them for supporting emerging artists, especially cats like these from outside our borders.

Once you’ve read up, check out Notion’s new tape below.  This dude can really spit and he’s also starting to get it in on the production side of things too.  I heard some of the stuff he has on deck and the world’s about to catch on to his talent real soon.  Grab the tape and then stay up to date with everything he’s doing at NotionBaby.com.  I’ll post up the new tape from Cee & Bekah shortly, since that’s fire as well.

El Prez – The Daily Show (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on September 6th, 2008 by Hyphen

El Prez Front

My man El Prez from Los Angeles has been leaking new joints recently, but he just dropped the official mixtape for y’all to check out entitled The Daily Show.  If you’re a Sound Session listener, you may remember Prez from his “UAINTUPONTHIS!” joint with the U-N-I homies.  And if you remember that, you know dude is dope.  I would write more, but I need to get some ish ready for Rock The Bells later today at the Gorge.  Matter of fact, I think I’ll bump this on the way down to the show…

Tracklisting and download link after the jump! Shout to What Eye Thought for the drop.

Mikkey Halsted – Uncrowned King (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on September 5th, 2008 by Hyphen

cover

If you’re as big of a Kanye fan as I am, you remember a lot of his early material featuring a dope Chicago MC named Mikkey. Well after a brief stint with Cash Money Records (I still have no idea why he signed there), Mikkey returned to his roots and has released a ton of great songs over the past few years. He just compiled a mixtape called Uncrowned King, which is filled with new and previously unreleased material featuring collaborations with ‘Ye, Common, No ID, and more.

Thanks to Drew over at FakeShoreDrive, you can download the tape right here.

The DMV Mixtape: August ’08

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on August 21st, 2008 by Hyphen

cover

The homey Modi over at DCtoBC sent this over for y’all to check out.  He recently paired up with two other blogs specializing in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area, StartOfTheLine and KNOWxONE to highlight some of the best talent from the area in a monthly mixtape series.  If you missed July, you can find it over at the Dopehouse.

As for this month’s edition, Modi explains:

we’re not here to whine about how our region is overlooked when it comes to hip hop; we’ve already made progress. wale had arguably the best mixtape of the year, and sold out that show at S.O.B.’s in NYC last month. tabi bonney’s videos were all over cable, and one even earned an MTV awards nomination. we have definitely made an impression on the music industry, and are on the way to a movement.

people are hungry to see what else the region has to offer, so we went extra hard in creating the best possible august edition of the DMV mixtape. in addition to the names you already know, we wanted to introduce a few that you may not. we got exclusives, we got unreleased tracks, we have some major label talent, and we have people who grinded out their tracks in their basements on makeshift studio equipment. and we can honestly say it all cranks. so take a second and check it out.

There it is.  Tracklisting and download link after the jump.  Speaking of the DMV, Soulstice will be on this week’s Sound Session.  Be sure to tune in!
