Meet Lupe Fiasco on Friday, Jan. 14th!

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on January 12th, 2011 by Hyphen

If you’ve listened to Sunday Night Sound Session at any point since our debut on KUBE six years ago, you already know that Lupe Fiasco is one of our favorite rappers.  Not only is he an incredible MC, but he’s one of the most forward thinking, intelligent, socially responsible, and innovative artists that we have in hip-hop.  On top of all that, he’s just a cool dude who has appeared on our show numerous times and always shows us, and Seattle, lots of love.

On Friday, January 14th, you…that’s right, YOU…can meet Lupe in person as he comes through the KUBE studios to hang out, sign autographs, talk with listeners, and discuss his highly anticipated upcoming album, Lasers.

If you’re able to come to the station in downtown Seattle from 11am to noon on Friday, the 14th, here are the details on how to win an invite to this meet and greet:

Tell us what your favorite Lupe verse is and why.  Email your answer to DJHyphen@gmail.com and if selected, we’ll notify you by Thursday at noon.

We’ll also pick a few random winners who retweet any of our announcements for this event on our Twitter feeds:

Be creative and thoughtful!  Just like Lupe.  Hope to see you Friday!

Sound Session #293 (1-9-11)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on January 11th, 2011 by Hyphen

Two fairly important announcements this week:

  • First, SNSS now officially begins each week at 10:15pm so be sure to start tuning in earlier if you’re listening live on 93.3 FM in Seattle or www.kube93.com online.  We’re excited (and thankful) to use the additional time to play even more good music each week and we plan on taking things to another level in 2011.
  • Secondly, Gmail is a buncha haters.  Nah, just playin.  I love Gmail more than pretty much anything…how else would my #inboxmadness series be possible?  That said, last week, they mistakenly flagged our weekly email with the SNSS playlist and download links as spam and it didn’t get delivered to any of our faithful listeners.  As I write this, I have no idea if that problem will resurface this week, but if you manage to see this and ever have issues with our weekly email, you can always download each week’s show both on the KUBE site and TAOD.  If you have any difficulty with any of the links or have any other questions, just email me – DJHyphen@gmail.com

Sound Session #289 (12-12-10)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on December 14th, 2010 by Hyphen

Alright, not to get all Rev Run/emo-Drake on you, but with my recent home purchase and subsequent move, I’ve been thinking about how my post-college life has broken down nicely into a few sections based on housing.  There was the first apartment phase where I was out of the dorms and really living on my own for the first time (crappy job but fun times).  That was followed by the second, nicer apartment with a better job and more money in the pocket, but overall, not as fun as the no-responsibility days that preceded it.  Now I’m on to the first home section and I’m determined to use the transition as a catalyst to spur the rest of my life on to a new phase as well.

Whether or not you followed the same type of route, your adult life is probably fairly similar.  Anyone reading this is part of the same basic culture and thus we all share the same basic goals, while battling the same basic challenges.  So personally, I’ve decided to take a step back and approach things a little bit more analytical than before.  The new plan is to define, prioritize, execute, complete, repeat, and assess.  That goes for everything in life.  Y’all might be able to do it all a little more fluidly, but I’m left brain.  Do whatever works best for you, but make sure you’re moving forward and progressing.  aka:

Ayo, the brother’s “Stillmatic”
I crawled up out of that grave, wiping the dirt, cleaning my shirt
They thought I’ll make another “Illmatic”
But it’s always forward I’m moving
Never backwards stupid, here’s another classic

And since you’ll need a soundtrack, Hubble SNSS gotchu.

  8. **INTERVIEW WITH KYLE LUCAS (of VONNEGUTT) & CAPTAIN MIDNITE, PT. 1**

Yelawolf on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on December 1st, 2010 by Hyphen

The same day that I chopped it up with Wiz Khalifa, his co-star for the Waken Baken Tour, Yelawolf, stopped by the studio to kick it as well.  We discussed his official debut album Trunk Muzik 0-60, how it continues where his last mixtape left off, his nervousness/excitement during the BET Awards Cipher, his history working every odd job imaginable, being homeless in Seattle, and more.

Not only is Wolf a cool, down to Earth dude…but his album and style are both really fresh.  Hip-hop needs his presence and music right now, so do yourself a favor and check out the project if you haven’t already.

If you prefer to just listen to the audio, here you go:

Bilal on Sound Session (Interview #2)

Posted in Interviews, Sound Session on November 26th, 2010 by Hyphen

Sound Session listeners will remember that about a month ago, we co-hosted the show with the legendary Bilal.  Loyal listeners will remember our first interview with him from last year, but this time around, we dedicated the whole episode to his music.  We played nothing but Bilal records all night, mixing a sampling of our favorite songs from all 3 of his classic albums, some b-sides, and guest appearances with his colorful and insightful commentary.  He even closed out the show with a live performance of “Levels” off his newest project, Airtight’s Revenge.

I posted the audio of the entire show previously (download here), but now I’ve got the accompanying video up for y’all if you’re so inclined.  Be sure to check out part three, where he performed “Levels” live on the air to close out the show.

Cop Bilal’s latest album, Airtight’s Revenge, if you haven’t already.  Another classic!

Sound Session #286 (11-21-10)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on November 22nd, 2010 by Hyphen

As I write this, it’s 25 degrees and snowing in Seattle, and as anyone who has been to the 206 knows, our city pretty much shuts down when these conditions set in.  We’re not necessarily overwhelmed by copious amounts of snow, but instead, the slightest dusting always turns our hills into deathtraps.  Additionally, Seattle drivers are notoriously poor (present company excluded, of course), so with the temperatures staying in the 20’s for the next few days, it doesn’t look like I’ll be venturing out of the crib for a bit.  As long as this clears up by the time I have to move to my new home, it works for me.

Meanwhile, SNSS is back to keep you warm for the Thanksgiving holiday and as we say each year, we’re thankful for [Hov] you, the listener [/Jay-Z].  Hope you get to share the holiday with your family, friends, and all the pumpkin pie you can eat.

Just another weekend here at SNSS…you know: Halloween night, having Maseo from the legendary De La Soul co-host with us, playing crazy dope records, etc..  The usual really.
