One of the most underrated cats in the game, TiRon, just dropped the video for “Throwing My Money” off his excellent Ketchup mixtape (download here). Straight up, this is America’s theme song.
Now that your boy got a nice little promotion at the j-o-b, I might have to partake in some of this behavior myself…”spend it if you got it”…music to Tim Geithner’s ears.
Honestly, this video is a little bit of a hot mess. Hype’s shots just seem so boring these days, the performances aren’t anything special, and the clips from LeBron’s movie just make it all look odd. Definitely would have been better served to not appear on the soundtrack and perhaps have a little more creativity with the scenes. With my day job involving music videos, I see 10 cooler clips than this a day…which is pretty sad when you think about all the major players that were involved with this project.
I remember seeing BK-One mix for Brother Ali damn near a decade ago and I was blown away by how well he complimented Ali’s live show, especially during his solo. Now he’s prepping the release of his first album and SNSS listeners will know that we’ve been rocking “Here I Am” with Phonte, Ali, and The Grouch real heavy lately. You need to cop BK’s album on the 6th…[Clinton Sparks] get familiar! [/Clinton]
Shout to the homies Peter and Zeke for sending this through.
Really pressed for time these days, so nothing fancy this week…just the business.
Great music from the likes of Pac Div, One Be Lo, Fashawn, J. Cole, Kam Moye, Othello, The Nope, Kid Cudi, Dynas, Little Dragon, Drake, Anton Genius, and more. Big shout to the homey El Prez for letting us world premiere his “Victory Lapse” track with Donwill and Von Pea of Tanya Morgan. Great song. Shout to Buckshot (and the whole Duck Down fam) as well for calling in this week to talk about his new album with KRS-One. Cop Survival Skills in stores now!

New visuals from Fresno’s Fashawn, produced by Exile. This is the lead joint from Fash’s upcoming Boy Meets World album, which is setting up to be an incredible release. Could it be another Below The Heavens?

Your boy got a promotion at the day job, which is a dope thing, but also means that time is at a premium…so I’ll let Sabzi explain this one:
People ask me why I care about making a mix of Hawaiian tunes. I tell them that it’s because Iʼm from Seattle.
I donʼt think I can apply the word ‘foreign’ to any cultural elements that have influenced me in becoming the person I am today.
Through years of, um, ‘nourishment’ from grinds, to listening to Jawaiian tunes as a teenager, to starting a group with a military kid from Honolulu, to learning the meaning of ‘false crack’ the hard way (ha!)… the spirit of Hawaii has long maintained a notable presence in my life.
And while Iʼm not Hawaiian, nor do I claim to be a local boy, I acknowledge and am thankful for the role that the Islands have played in the development of my cultural identity.
For me, a big part of the OOF! EP project was to experiment with a new way of identifying who we are and where we come from. It was an exercise in global cultural expression. Perhaps this is the age we can start believing that ‘where we are from’ is anywhere that has influenced us in becoming who we are. And perhaps our brothers and sisters are simply those who want to share this belief with us.
Watch out tho. When you embrace this idea, you start to think that home can be everywhere and your people could be everyone.
New People comin thru, son!
Respect to In4mation for the nifty ‘OOF!’ logo they designed and lent us, respect to Ohana for engineering the delicious shrimp tempura + diced spicy scallop + krab + masago sushi that they’ve dubbed the ‘69 Roll,’ and respect to you for reading this and listening to these tunes.
Ahhhhh, are you kidding me? This is so ridiculously fresh. As soon as I heard this song a while back, it was an instant classic. The video is simple, but works and captures the mid-90’s vibe nicely. If you missed Pac Div on SNSS, check out the interview here and please download Church League Champions ASAP if you’re still sleeping…
Anyone who follows TAOD knows that last week marked Seattle’s annual music & arts festival, Bumbershoot. J. Moore and I have hosted the main stage hip-hop show for the past few years, but this time around, I had the special pleasure of not only being on the “Bumberboard” that helped plan the entire event, but I even got to perform by DJ’ing for the homies U-N-I.
Thurzday and Y-O took to the Fisher Green Stage (alongside artists like Mayer Hawthorne, Janelle Monae, De La Soul, and more) to rock in front of an enthusiastic crowd. We ran through a high energy set including tracks like “Cali Soul,” “Beautiful Day,” “Land Of The Kings,” “Supreme,” “K.R.E.A.M.,” “Hollywood Hiatus,” and more. Aside from the classicness that occurs at 1:29, the highlight has to be “Supreme.” The kids were wylin’ out to that one and both Y-O and Thurz got some crowd surfing in.
I had a really good time all weekend, so big shouts to everyone involved: One Reel, the artists, KUBE, the homies, the new folks I met, and [Jay-Z] most importantly, you, the customer [/Hov!]. If I have time, I’ll be posting up some more footage of various Bumbershoot performances here on TAOD. Stay tuned.
I absolutely love this track off The Kid Daytona’s Come Fly With Me project (download here). The homey 6th Sense murdered the beat and Tona’s flow is so ill on it. Shout to Three/21 Media and Derek Pike on the direction for the visuals too. Great job all around.
Some words from the director Derek Pike:
Last week I shot the “Air Born†video for The Kid Daytona featuring Bun B. The beat which is produced by 6th Sense has this real mellow floaty vibe to it so I knew I wanted to shoot the majority of this video with someone or something floating in midair. Since shooting in outerspace wasn’t in the budget, I had to settle for NYC. Luckily, Daytona knew someone here on earth that could defy gravity for us, EBCstar Africa. We shot the whole video at a little park downtown, no permits. Aside from having to work around screaming kids at camp, and a basketball leagues scheduled game everything went surprisingly smooth. Daytona and Bun B are two of the nicest and most laid back artists I have ever worked with. Shout outs to the Three/21 fam Rik, Nancy and Steve, Jamal, Owen, Jordan at Sneaktip, Dan, Evan, and of course Daytona, Bun B, 6th and Africa.
