Panda swag

Posted in Random Ish, Videos on June 18th, 2009 by Hyphen

Yes, I’m a hip-hop dude…but yes, I have an unhealthy obsession with pandas.  Sue me.

I think the description sums it up nicely:

I’m not going to sugar coat it. This video is eight baby pandas playing in a crib for four minutes. Nothing really happens, but there are eight baby pandas. Eight. Baby. Pandas.

Nuff said.  Shout to McFly on the assist.

New duo 5 O’Clock Shadowboxers drop their first video from their upcoming free LP, The Slow Twilight, due out June 23rd.  Zilla Rocca on the mic, Blurry Drones on production, and visuals by Henry Choi.  I think it turned out pretty dope…what do you think?

Inverse – Keys To The City: LA

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on June 17th, 2009 by Hyphen

Tunji and Toby linked up with Yours Truly and GregTheDude for a Los Angeles edition of the Keys 2 The City series:

Inverse gives you an insider’s tour of the finer restaurants that populate the City of Angels such as Tito’s Tacos and IN-N-OUT Burger, all while shedding some light on their backstory. As Los Angeles brims with the talented new voices it’s inspired, Inverse takes the lead and treats us to a set of fresh acapellas. If you like what you hear, cop the So True EP on iTunes or Amazon and support independent artists.

Amen.  Sidenote, I think I was with them after a late night studio session when we hit that Taco joint back in our college days.  Might not have been the same one, but either way, ahhh…the good ol’ days.

Choklate – Suns Out / Grown Folks (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos, Remixes, Videos on June 16th, 2009 by Hyphen

Awww yeah, the homegirl Chok just dropped the video for 2 joints off her new album, To Whom It May Concern.  Trust when I tell you that not only is she one of the most talented singers in our lovely city, but she’s right there at the top of the pack nationally.  People are starting to catch on, so hop on the bandwagon before you’re too late!

Also, you may remember the Vitamin D “Suns Out” beat from our Cornerstone Mixtape where Thig Natural of the Physics ripped a little freestyle intro.  Have you downloaded the tape yet?

And just in case you needed more proof that Seattle is jam packed full of talent, peep this video of KDCutz remixing “Suns Out.”

Wow.

Buff1 ft. AB – Real Appeal (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on June 16th, 2009 by Hyphen

The last time I posted a video from Buff, it sparked a mini-rant, so I’ll try to keep this one shorter.  Not only is this a great song (flawless beat from 14KT, dope hook from AB, ill lyrics from Mr. 1der) and a great video (ladies x 3…shouts to Jackson on the directorial debut), but it’s a great example of how most “underground” hip-hop these days actually dispels the stereotypes that the term implies.

In other words, this ain’t even “underground.”  This is real life.  I don’t know about the rest of you, but I don’t really dig music I can’t relate to personally.  Instead, I bump this kind of “everyman” hip-hop that folks like Buff, Now On, and the rest of the A-Side Worldwide family represent.  People need joints like this to prove that your ‘girl’ track doesn’t need to be fake, corny, or misogynistic.  Like Buff mentioned in the song, just be little ol’ you and it’s all good*.

Cop There’s Only One in stores now for that goodness…

*Now if being you really does mean making it rain thousands of dollars in a strip club, then by all means, pimp on pimpin’…just throw those dollars [Jay] thaaaaaattaway [/Hov]

Marco Polo & Torae – Party Crashers (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on June 16th, 2009 by Hyphen

Peep the new video from one of the best albums of the year, Marco Polo & Torae’s Double Barrel, out now on Duck Down.  I’ve mentioned it before on the site, but if you’re looking for some of that good ol’ fashioned boom bap ish that will break your neck, this album is for you.

That said, there’s range on the project too…it’s not all the same hyped up vibe as this video would suggest.  We played “Crashing Down” on last week’s SNSS and it’s more sentimental and reflective.  Tor kills that joint, detailing the effects the record industry’s demise has on artists who put their hearts and souls into this music, only to see fans bootleg their hard work for free.

Support these dudes.  Cop Double Barrel now.

Sidenote, the last scene shows the kind of party I’d crash.  Run that cake son.

The Slaughterhouse Rules

Posted in Artists, Comedy, Videos on June 16th, 2009 by Hyphen

Little known, and completely unimportant, fact, this is the first The Real skit that actually made me laugh.  I think the “rewind those 8 bars” part did it for me…pause.

Sound Session #211 (6-14-09)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on June 15th, 2009 by Hyphen

Back once again, it’s the incredible…err, Sound Session.  Y’all know the drill though: here’s another edition of SNSS, complete with new tracks from artists like the Clipse, Ali Vegas, U-N-I, Jay-Z, Mos Def, Grouch & Eligh, Raekwon, J. Cole, Grand Puba, Outasight, and more.  There’s a ton of great music out these days and each week, it’s a thrill to be able to blast it out over a 100K-watt frequency.

Oh…almost forgot – I should congratulate the Lakers for winning the NBA Championship.  I’m pretty indifferent to the current team (Van Exel/Eddie/Ceballos/etc. was my squad though), but I do prefer to see folks who haven’t won rings before get that feeling.  I would have liked the Magic to win, but L.A. was clearly the best team in the league.  Plus, we know Sasha Vujacic, Jordan Farmar, Adam Morrison, DJ Mbenga, and the crew put in that hard work to get their well deserved rings.

Special shout to Jerry West and the Grizzlies for making it all possible by swinging probably the most one sided trade in the history of organized sports and rescuing the franchise.  Anytime you pull off a trade that NBA Live would veto, you know you’re the king.  The Logo comes through again for the Lakers!  “…no disrespect.”

Show #211 (6-14-09)

  1. Clipse ft. Pharrell – “I’m Good”
  2. Drama ft. Nas, Willie The Kid, Scarface, & Marsha Ambrosius – “Yacht Music”
  3. Ali Vegas ft. Glenn Lewis – “The Block”
  4. Eclipse (of the Parker Brothaz) ft. BJ – “Still Parker Brothaz” (Local Artist)
  5. U-N-I – “Stylin’”
  6. J. Cole – “Heartache”
  7. Jay-Z – “D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)”
  8. Mos Def ft. Slick Rick – “Auditorium”
  9. Grand Puba ft. Lord Jamar & Rell – “I See Dead People”
  10. Outasight – “Brand New Day”
  11. Mycle Wastman – “Still Holdin’ On” (Local Artist)
  12. Murs – “Break Up (The OJ Song)”
  13. Mayer Hawthorne – “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out (Astronote Remix)”
  14. Ghostface Killah – “Forever”
  15. Shawn Starr ft. GMK – “Past The Games” (Local Artist)

  17. Grouch & Eligh ft. Blu – “Old Souls”
  18. Tame One ft. Breeze Brewin & Aesop Rock – “Molly”
  19. Raekwon ft. M.O.P. & Kool G Rap – “Ill Figurines”

The Knux tear down Bonnaroo

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on June 13th, 2009 by Hyphen

ahahahahahaah aw man, look at the homies Krispy and Al!  The Knux made one of the least diverse crowds I’ve ever seen go absolutely crazy at the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee this weekend.  LOL @ the irony of ending with Dead Prez’ “Hip-Hop”…I love it.

Seattle people: Be sure to come check out the Knux at Bumbershoot this year, where they’ll be opening up for the Black Eyed Peas on the mainstage.  Shout to Krispy, Al, Josh, and the whole crew.  See y’all soon fellas.
